Movies to Watch If You Love Indiana Jones

Released in 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark revolutionized adventure films and introduced audiences to the iconic hero Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford has since reprised the role four more times, appearing in The Temple of Doom (1984), The Last Crusade (1989), The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).

The Indiana Jones movies are famous for their exciting music, thrilling action scenes, unforgettable characters, humor, and Dr. Jones’ knack for figuring out complex ancient mysteries while searching for lost treasures. If you’re a fan of Indiana Jones, here are 15 other films you might like.

‘Uncharted’ (2022)

Uncharted is a movie based on the incredibly popular video game series of the same name. It tells the story of Nathan Drake, a witty and adventurous treasure hunter who travels the world.

As a big fan, I was so happy to see the movie really capture the spirit of the game and bring Nathan Drake to a whole new audience! Tom Holland was perfect, and the supporting cast – Mark Wahlberg and Antonio Banderas were fantastic! It totally reminded me of Indiana Jones, with Nathan Drake feeling like a spiritual successor. Plus, the action was HUGE and the locations were absolutely gorgeous – it was a really thrilling ride!

‘Jumanji’ (1996)

Based on the popular children’s book, Jumanji delivers the exciting action and adventure that fans of Indiana Jones enjoy, but in a way that’s suitable for the whole family. The story begins when two kids find a dusty old board game in their new house. They quickly learn this isn’t any ordinary game, especially when they accidentally free Alan Parrish, who has been trapped in the jungle for years.

To free Alan from Jumanji forever, the group needs to finish the game, battling hunters, monkeys, and other dangers along the way. Robin Williams shines with his classic, energetic performance in this fun movie, and it also showcases a young Kirsten Dunst in one of her first roles.

‘Secret of the Incas’ (1954)

Even a quick look at the 1954 film Secret of the Incas reveals strong similarities to Indiana Jones. The main character, played by Charlton Heston, is noticeably similar to Dr. Jones.

Dressed in a classic adventurer’s outfit – a brown leather jacket, fedora, tan pants, and a shoulder bag – he journeys across Peru seeking a lost Incan treasure. Interestingly, the team behind Raiders of the Lost Ark all watched Secret of the Incas together, and that film’s impact on the Raiders franchise is clear.

‘National Treasure’ (2004)

Nicolas Cage delivers a fantastic performance as a treasure hunter and codebreaker who’s in a thrilling competition with others to find a massive treasure hidden in American history. It all starts when he discovers a secret map coded onto the back of the Declaration of Independence.

If you loved watching Indiana Jones solve ancient mysteries and crack codes, you’ll likely enjoy National Treasure, which is full of intriguing puzzles and secrets. Though not as high-energy as Dr. Jones, Nicolas Cage’s character has a similar playful wit and quirky personality.

‘The Dig’ (2018)

If you enjoy the archaeological adventures in the Indiana Jones movies and are looking for a more realistic film on the subject, check out The Dig. This movie is based on the true story of the famous Sutton Hoo archaeological discovery. It’s adapted from a novel of the same name, which creatively retells the events surrounding the dig that took place on a private estate in England just before World War II.

Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes lead the cast of The Dig, a film based on the real story of an archaeological find: the unearthing of an ancient Anglo-Saxon ship burial, potentially the final resting place of a king. Set in the same era as the early Indiana Jones movies, the film shows a time when archaeology was a newer, less-established science.

‘Sahara’ (2005)

Indiana Jones often had tricky relationships with the women in his adventures, and the series explored several romances. While it’s a big action movie, Sahara is also a fun romantic comedy. It stars Matthew McConaughey as he searches for lost treasure and battles a ruthless warlord who plans to release a deadly disease. Throughout his journey, he deals with his growing attraction to a captivating doctor, played by Penélope Cruz, who works for the World Health Organization.

‘Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death’ (1989)

If you enjoy the fun, over-the-top adventure of movies like Indiana Jones, you might like Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death. It’s set in a different version of California where a hidden, southern jungle is ruled by a society of women who eat men.

Facing a challenge to traditional power structures, the US military sees this independent tribe of women as a threat and tries to control them. They enlist a feminist professor to investigate and bring the women into line. Starring an early performance by Bill Maher, Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death lives up to its over-the-top title and is thoroughly enjoyable.

‘The Lost City’ (2022)

The Lost City playfully references and spoofs classic adventure films like Indiana Jones. The story follows a romance novelist (Sandra Bullock) and her book cover model (Channing Tatum) as they try to evade a wealthy and eccentric collector (Daniel Radcliffe) who believes they can locate a legendary lost city featured in one of her novels.

These characters aren’t skilled like Dr. Jones – they’re hilariously unprepared for any danger. The funniest part of this comedy is definitely Brad Pitt’s unforgettable cameo, which you’ll be thinking about long after the movie ends.

‘The Mummy’ (1999)

The Mummy delivers the same thrilling action, adventure, romance, and comedy as the Indiana Jones movies, but with a touch of horror. Many consider it one of the most fun adventure films since the original Indiana Jones trilogy from the 80s. Despite some dated special effects, the movie gained a dedicated fanbase, largely thanks to Brendan Fraser’s fantastic performance.

‘Congo’ (1995)

Released in 1995, Congo is an adventure film starring Laura Linney, Ernie Hudson, and Tim Curry. It’s based on a novel by Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park, and came after the huge success of the Jurassic Park movie. The story follows a team sent into the Congo jungle to find a missing group of diamond miners, but they quickly encounter many unforeseen threats in the dangerous wilderness.

If you enjoy the more lighthearted and over-the-top moments in Indiana Jones films, you’ll probably have fun with this wildly entertaining action movie. It’s so bad it’s good, and even earned seven Razzie nominations – including one for ‘Amy the Talking Gorilla,’ who was nominated for Worst New Star and Worst Supporting Actress.
