A new series focusing on Spider-Noir – a different version of Spider-Man, played by Nicolas Cage, who first appeared in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – is coming soon. Set in 1930s New York, the show follows an older, struggling private investigator who has to become a superhero again when a mysterious and dangerous case lands on his desk. While the Spider-Verse movies have opened the door for several spin-off shows, Spider-Noir wasn’t the one most people expected. Now, there are hints that even more spin-off series are in development.
Oren Uziel, the showrunner for Spider-Noir, recently told SFX Magazine that several new projects featuring different versions of Spider-Man are currently in development. Similar to Spider-Noir, these shows will explore diverse tones, styles, and genres, and will appear across both movies and TV series. Uziel shared that…
I’m really into the Spider-Noir project right now, but I’ve also been hearing about other Spider-Verse variations they’re developing. I’ve chatted with some of the teams working on them, and honestly, they sound incredible. They seem to be building on the same concept as Spider-Noir – taking a familiar genre and making it fresh by introducing a different Spider-Person into the mix. It’s a really cool approach, and it feels like it’s going to unlock so many new possibilities. As a film fan, I’m genuinely thrilled about where this is all heading.
Uziel didn’t reveal any details about other potential Spider-Man TV shows Sony Pictures Television might be developing. Although Spider-Noir appeared in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the various Spider-People from that movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and the upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could inspire new series. A Spider-Punk film starring Daniel Kaluuya, who would also co-write the script, is reportedly in the works, and a Spider-Gwen movie has been rumored for a long time. Unfortunately, the Silk: Spider: Society series isn’t currently part of these plans.
In September 2020, Amazon Prime Video announced plans for a television series based on the Marvel character Silk (Cindy Moon), who gained her powers from the same radioactive spider that bit Spider-Man. Originally titled Silk: Spider-Society in 2022, the series was to be produced by the team behind Spider-Noir – Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller. Angela King, known for her work on The Walking Dead, was brought in to lead the show. However, production was delayed due to the writers’ strike. By February 2024, the project was being reworked to appeal more to a male audience, but ultimately, it was canceled in May 2024.
All eight episodes of Spider-Noir will premiere on MGM+ in both black-and-white and color on May 25th, and will become available worldwide on Prime Video starting May 27th. This marks the first live-action Spider-Man TV series since the Japanese Spider-Man show, which aired from 1977 to 1979. Following Sony Pictures’ unsuccessful effort to create a Spider-Man universe with films focused on characters like Venom and Morbius, they now appear to be shifting their strategy to focus on different versions of Spider-Man in both live-action and animated projects.
