Monster Hunter Wilds’ Success is Because of its Story, Voice Acting and Cross-Play – Producer
Ryozo Tsujimoto, producer of Monster Hunter Wilds, attributes the game’s remarkable success to its focus on a more narrative structure. In an interview with Nikkei (via Automaton), Tsujimoto points out that the engaging storyline, cross-platform multiplayer, and voice acting were crucial factors behind the triumph of Monster Hunter Wilds.
To provide some background on the impressive performance of “Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak”, Capcom disclosed last week that the game surpassed 8 million copies sold within its initial launch weekend. This achievement not only outperformed the sales for “Monster Hunter Rise”, which moved 4 million units in a similar time span, and “Monster Hunter World”, with 5 million sales, but also established “Sunbreak” as Capcom’s fastest-selling game ever.
The local sales figures for Monster Hunter Wilds have been exceptionally strong. Ever since its launch, this game has consistently held the top spot on Famitsu’s weekly physical sales charts, with over 601,000 physical copies being sold in the country. Given that Japan’s gamers predominantly prefer PC and PS5 for their gaming needs, it can be assumed that most of these physical copies were likely purchased for the PS5 version.
The computer version of Monster Hunter Wilds has achieved considerable success, reaching a simultaneous player peak of nearly 1.4 million when it was initially released. This has placed Monster Hunter Wilds among the top five most played games in terms of concurrent players, trailing behind titles such as PUBG: Battlegrounds, Black Myth: Wukong, and Palworld.
Since the launch of World, Capcom has placed greater focus on the narrative of Monster Hunter. This game offered a complete campaign, inviting players to explore a new continent in order to uncover the reason behind an unusual event known as the Elder Crossing. The Iceborne expansion for World further deepened the story, giving characters like the Handler more compelling personal motives.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the storyline is expanded significantly, offering a complete narrative with well-developed character arcs. As the game starts, players step into the shoes of a Hunter tasked with assisting a child named Nata in locating his home. This journey takes place across an unexplored region known as the Forbidden Lands.
The title introduces a variety of fresh monsters into the diverse collection that the franchise is known for, complementing returning creatures such as Nerscylla, as well as our beloved series symbols Rathian and Rathalos. Additionally, we encounter new enemies like Rey Dau, Uth Duna, Nur Udra, and Jin Dahaad.
In addition, new monstrous creatures are expected to join the game in upcoming patches. The initial free update has been officially announced for launch in April, and it’s set to introduce Mizutsune to the game’s lineup of beasts. This update will also incorporate long-awaited features such as a reappearing social space called Gathering Hub, where players can socialize between hunting sessions.
Lately, Capcom has been providing smaller updates for the game, Monster Hunter Rise, to rectify several technical glitches that gamers could potentially encounter.
