Monster Hunter Wilds’ Poor PC Performance is Reportedly Due to Constant DLC Checking

The Monster Hunter series has been very successful for Capcom, particularly with the release of Monster Hunter World in January 2018. Therefore, the initial sales of Monster Hunter Wilds have been a bit of a disappointment. This is partly because the game has been facing problems since its release, including poor performance on PCs. Despite several large updates and fixes, it still needs significant improvement.

Surprisingly, the performance difference isn’t just about how well the game is optimized. A Reddit user found that the game actually runs much better – consistently over 80 frames per second – when all cosmetic DLC is installed, compared to running just the base game, which only achieves 20-25 FPS. This seems to be because the game is constantly checking for DLC content. With so much DLC available, PC performance could continue to get worse as more content is added.

To demonstrate the issue, the user built a mod that tricks the game into believing they have all downloadable content, without actually giving them access to it. Surprisingly, this significantly boosted the game’s performance. You can see a comparison in the video linked below. They strongly advise against using this type of mod and have reported the information to Capcom’s support team.

Adding fake DLC files seems to actually improve performance, which is pretty strange. While it’s hard to say for sure, this could explain why Wilds still isn’t running as well as it should, even after the developers have tried to fix it. Hopefully, they can figure it out quickly, especially if they’re planning to release more paid content.
