Monster Hunter Wilds: How To Beat Rathian (Weaknesses and Rewards)
In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through strategies for defeating the Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds, covering its vulnerabilities and the benefits of conquering it.
Rathian stands as one of the most awe-inspiring creatures in the Monster Hunter franchise, first appearing in the initial Monster Hunter game. Now, this storied beast returns in Monster Hunter World, and oh, what a thrill it is to engage in combat with it! This monster is ferocious, packs a punch, and maintains some of the characteristic behaviors we’ve grown accustomed to throughout the series.
Although Rathian may seem formidable with its aggressive style, it does have vulnerabilities and patterns that can be exploited. If you’re finding it tough to keep up with this boss in Monster Hunter Worlds, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! In this guide, we will walk you through the steps of defeating Rathian. We’ll delve into its weaknesses, how to locate them, and the treasures waiting for you once the battle is over.
Rathian Overview
In the realms of Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll find Rathian – a formidable Flying Wyvern dwelling in the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, and Oilwell Basin. This airborne beast is no pushover; it dishes out both physical attacks and Fire-elemental damage that swiftly depletes your Health Points.
This boss appears larger than expected but moves surprisingly quickly, leaving minimal reaction time. You’ll need to stay agile and keep a sharp eye out for warning signs to avoid its attacks. Also, since it frequently employs fire-based assaults, be cautious of the risk of Fireblight. Therefore, it would be prudent to gather Nulberries before embarking on the hunt.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve got to say, the Rathian ain’t all that tough once you know its weaknesses. This beast is particularly susceptible to Thunder and Dragon element attacks. Plus, it’s not immune to common status effects like Poison, Sleep, or Paralysis, which can really throw it off its game!
How To Unlock Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds
After finishing the main story and Chapter 3 of Monster Hunter Worlds, you’ll encounter Rathian. To reach this stage, you need to complete Chapter 3, which will trigger the game credits and guide you towards Chapter 4-1. Once there, explore the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, and Oilwell Basin regions to locate Rathian roaming freely in the wild.
Where To Find Rathian
In Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll come across the Rathian in the Scarlet Forest, Windward Plains, and Oilwell Basin areas. But remember, before you can do so, you must finish the main story of the game. You achieve this by playing and finishing Chapter 3. After the credits roll following the completion of Chapter 3, you’ll move on to Chapter 4-1. Only then will you be able to venture into any of the regions mentioned and hunt the Rathian.
Rathian Weaknesses
Despite being aggressive and packing a punch, Rathian can be effectively managed by targeting his weaknesses. Each of his attacks leaves an opening for you to capitalize on, boosting your chances in combat. Notably, Rathian is susceptible to Thunder and Dragon-type elemental attacks, offering you the chance to inflict those specific elements and significantly increase your overall damage output.
Using elemental weapons specifically designed for inflicting damage to its vulnerable elements is crucial for defeating the Flying Wyvern, the Rathian. Additionally, it’s important to note that the Rathian has several weak points on its body that you can exploit. These weak spots are located at its mouth, wings, tail, and legs. By aiming your weapons precisely at these body parts, you’ll be able to take down the boss swiftly.
Rathian’s Elemental Weaknesses
- Thunder
- Dragon
Rathian’s Status Weaknesses
- Poison
- Sleep
- Paralysis
- Blastblight

Rathian Weak Points
Previously mentioned, the Flying Wyvern possesses several vulnerable areas that you can take advantage of. These susceptible areas encompass its mouth, wings, tail, and legs. Among these, the head is the most fragile, susceptible to Sever, Blunt, and Shot damage equally. Moreover, it’s the smallest weak point, making precision crucial in your attacks. Following the head, the tail should be your second focus as it’s particularly vulnerable to Sever and Blunt damage. Aim for the head and tail first, then defeat the beast.
Best Weapons for Rathian in Monster Hunter Wilds
Rathian is constantly on the move, making it challenging to find opportunities to attack. To make each opportunity count, consider wielding a greatsword for precise, powerful strikes that gradually whittle down its health. Given that Rathian is weak against Thunder and Dragon-type attacks, we suggest equipping either the Smiting Fulgur I or the Fulgurcleaver Guardiana for added thunder damage, or the Veldian Gladius I or Stalwart Lamorak to inflict dragon damage.
Items To Carry for the Battle
- Flash Pods

How To Beat Rathian in MH Wilds
Previously mentioned, Rathian strikes forcefully and frequently, yet clearly signals its attacks. Our approach is straightforward: observe for the signs, dodge the attack, and then capitalize by delivering a powerful counterblow before repeating the sequence. Given that we’ll only be dealing a few blows at once, our goal is to focus on vulnerabilities and make sure we inflict elemental damage to maximize the impact of each strike.
As a fervent admirer, I must warn you about Rathian’s formidable array of attacks that demand your vigilance. The attack that you’ll encounter most frequently is the fiery breath it unleashes. When engaged, the beast gathers its flames and aims them at you. You can spot this by noticing the Wyvern raising its head in a semi-circular motion to charge up this attack. To dodge these flames, wait for this telltale sign and swiftly move away. This moment of evasion provides an opportunity for you to maneuver to one side and strike at its head.
Opt to maneuver behind it and deliver a hit on its tail, but beware of a tail swipe if you do so. The animal will look back before using the sweep, so stay alert for this signal by constantly monitoring its head. After dodging and creating some distance, the creature might charge directly towards you. This charge doesn’t have any warning signs, but it moves relatively slow and can be easily avoided.
Whenever Rathian soars aloft, be mindful of her tail whip. In this maneuver, the Aerial Beast employs its tail to fling you skyward, inflicting severe harm. Moreover, this creature has another potent attack in reserve – the charged fireball. The Wyvern amasses its flames and expels a colossal fireball. Keep an eye out for a white glow and vacate promptly.
Tips To Defeat Rathian
- Rathian uses a mix of fire-based attacks and physical strikes. The former is capable of inflicting Fireblight, so carry as many Nulberries as you can to cure the status effect. If you run short of the item in the midst of battle, spam the dodge roll button to negate the effect.
- Use items such as the Flash Pods, the Shock Traps, or the Pitfall Traps to increase your odds of winning.
- The monster is weak to Thunder and Dragon-type weapons. Make sure you’re armed with the right weapons before you head to battle.
- The monster gives you openings towards the end of each attack. Make sure to exploit the openings and be precise with your attacks.
