The show returns on February 27th with a second season that continues the story within the MonsterVerse. Early reviews suggest that while longtime fans will likely be thrilled, it might not be enough to draw in new viewers.
The latest season is currently getting positive reviews, with a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 14 critic reviews. While slightly lower than the 86% score of the first season, early feedback suggests it will still be a hit when it starts streaming in a few days.
I’m really excited for Monarch Season 2! It’s bringing back Kurt and Wyatt Russell, which is fascinating because they’re both playing Lee Shaw, but at different points in his life. Plus, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, and Ren Watabe are all returning, and this time, the monster action is heading to Skull Island – and yes, that means we’ll be seeing a very famous giant ape!
It’s doubtful anyone will start watching Season 2 of Monarch without already being familiar with the MonsterVerse. And that’s okay – most critics agree this show is specifically designed for fans who’ve been following the story for the past ten years, and they’ll be richly rewarded. IGN’s Tata Bennett highlighted that the series still strikes the best balance between exciting monster action and a genuinely engaging story. This was a strength of the first season too, focusing more on the human characters than the films typically do, which made the monster appearances even more impactful.
Jeff Ewing from The Direct says the new season is a must-see for Godzilla and sci-fi enthusiasts, while Rendy Jones at RogerEbert.com believes it’s the best installment of the MonsterVerse yet, once it finds its footing. David Caballero of Collider points out that the series successfully captures what made the Godzilla x Kong films so enjoyable, keeping the Titans – the giant monsters – as the main focus, which is what fans want.
The real challenge lies in creating a compelling story with heart while still delivering the giant monster action fans expect – seeing a massive creature battle Godzilla and face the consequences. Monarch has been remarkably successful at this, and Season 2 appears to be continuing that winning formula: introducing new monsters, developing complex storylines, and subtly building towards a third season.
Before Season 3 of Monarch arrives, Wyatt Russell will star in a spin-off series. This new show will be a Cold War thriller featuring monsters and will explore the previously untold story of a young Lee Shaw, filling in the gaps about the years he lost while trapped in the Hollow Earth – a place where time seemed to stand still for him.
Fans are really excited about the return of Monarch for its second season, and it seems like the new episodes will be a great addition to the MonsterVerse. With more spin-offs planned and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova coming in 2027, it’s a fantastic time to be a fan of epic monster battles.
