As a lifelong Trekkie with memories of Star Trek: Voyager etched deeply into my gaming heart, I can hardly contain my excitement about Robert Picardo’s return as The Doctor in not one, but two new series! It feels like a dream come true to see the acerbic wit of the Emergency Medical Hologram grace our screens once more.
Robert Picardo has made a return as The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager not only on Star Trek: Prodigy, but he’s one of the main characters for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the newest series coming from Paramount+. Should Prodigy get picked up for a third season, there’s no reason to believe that The Doctor won’t still be part of the team. Not that fans are complaining. We’d missed the acerbic wit of the Emergency Medical Hologram and were thrilled to see him in the first look for season two of Prodigy, which is available on Netlix.
If Picardo hadn’t joined Star Trek: Lower Decks, the creator, Mike McMahan, had planned to invite him as a tutor for Tendi onboard the Cerritos instead. McMahan mentioned this during an interview with Trekmovie. Before introducing any legacy characters, McMahan explained that all showrunners would discuss the plot and how they’d utilize each character to avoid conflicts within the series.
Anytime we were gonna use legacy characters or do a big plot line, or even if we had the season kind of figured out, all the showrunners from all the Trek shows would get together and talk through everything, and if there was something that was sounding a little similar, we’d be like “Okay, hold on, when you’re doing that, how are you going to express that?” Because we don’t want somebody to sit down and be like “I just watched this on another Trek.”
When McMahan learned that Prodigy wanted The Doctor in their second series installment, it seemed logical to him since, in his view, Prodigy mirrored the Voyager show. This move by the Prodigy team prompted him to adjust Tendi’s path, a decision he believes turned out well. Additionally, he found it intriguing that Prodigy subtly referenced the Cerritos in their second season.
Start streaming the debut of the last season’s first episode from Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+ right now! Don’t forget to tune in for fresh instalments every Thursday.
