Matt Dillon will star in MGM+’s new streaming series, a reimagining of the classic Western film, The Magnificent Seven. He’ll be playing the character Chris Adams, famously portrayed by Yul Brynner in the original 1960 movie.
Chris Adams, as depicted in the MGM+ series, leads a team of seven gunslingers tasked with defending a peaceful village. A ruthless land baron is trying to steal their land, and Chris is determined to stop him. He’s a quiet, strong leader who doesn’t tolerate injustice or needless violence, and he lives by a strict personal code of fairness and self-control. He often communicates more through his intense gaze than through words.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, praised Matt Dillon’s performance, saying he brings a remarkable depth and seriousness to the famous role. Wright believes Dillon is ideal for leading the new version of The Magnificent Seven because of his skill at playing characters who are complicated and face difficult choices. The series will build on the original film’s spirit while examining enduring themes of bravery, forgiveness, and fighting injustice, with Dillon’s portrayal being central to the narrative.
MGM+ announced that Dillon will also serve as an executive producer on the show. The series will consist of six episodes and production is scheduled to start in Calgary in June.
MGM+’s The Magnificent Seven Reboot Is Full Steam Ahead
MGM+’s The Magnificent Seven comes from the creators of shows like Touch, Dig, and Crossing Jordan. Joining them as executive producers are Donald De Line (known for Billy the Kid and Wayward Pines), Lawrence Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman. The series is being produced by MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios.
MGM+’s new series, The Magnificent Seven, is set in the rough American West of the 1880s. It tells the story of seven skilled but troubled mercenaries who are hired to defend a quiet Quaker village after it’s attacked by bandits working for a greedy landowner. As the mercenaries prepare for a seemingly impossible fight, they struggle with a difficult question: can violence ever be justified when protecting people who believe in peace? The show reveals the personal stories of each mercenary, explaining their motivations and exploring themes of honor, sacrifice, finding forgiveness, what’s right and wrong, and belief.
Dillon has several exciting projects on the horizon, including the film The Fence by Clare Denis, which recently premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He’s also preparing to portray Frank Stallone, the actor and brother of Sylvester Stallone, in a new movie directed by Peter Farrelly.
Matt Dillon received nominations for major awards – including the Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, Critics’ Choice, and BAFTA – for his role as Officer Ryan in the film Crash. Throughout his career, he’s also appeared in well-known movies like The Outsiders, There’s Something About Mary, Drugstore Cowboy, Beautiful Girls, Singles, To Die For, Wild Things, and Asteroid City. More recently, he had a role in the Apple TV+ series High Desert.
