Meryl Streep makes rare comments about rumored boyfriend Martin Short after playing coy for years

Meryl Streep made a rare comment about Martin Short, whom she has been rumored to be dating.

During a Monday interview on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, 76-year-old actress discussed the chance she might return to the Broadway stage.

The actress from The Devil Wears Prada 2, who recently wowed at a premiere, has a long history with the stage, including performances on Broadway in the 1970s and other theater roles over the years.

When the talk show host asked if the famous actress planned to perform on stage again, she brought up a close friend, former co-star, and someone she’s reportedly been romantically linked to – a 76-year-old man – in her response.

‘Oh, I would love to do so,’ she told Cohen. ‘I was talking with Marty Short about that.’ 

She also added: ‘We were thinking that would be fun to do something together.’ 

Meryl Streep and Steve Martin have been romantically linked since January 2024, after they were seen together at the Golden Globes awards that month. The two actors co-star on the show ‘Only Murders in the Building’.

People have seen them together many times over the years, but they’ve never publicly admitted to being a couple.

In the show Only Murders in the Building, the characters played by the actors recently got married as part of the storyline.

Meryl Streep became part of the popular cast of Only Murders in the Building in 2023, playing Loretta Durkin, a Broadway actress who develops a romantic relationship with Oliver Putnam, played by Martin Short.

Short has also previously gushed about Streep and shut down dating rumors. 

While talking about working with Streep, he opened up about what might surprise fans about her. 

‘I think just how easy it is, how loose she is,’ he told Entertainment Tonight in September 2024. 

‘She doesn’t carry any of her 21 Oscar nominations to the set,’ Short continued.

‘She has a right to be a diva, and she’s just so polite and fun and generous,’ he added.

Short had previously denied rumors that she and the actor were dating, and claimed her role as his character’s love interest was simply a coincidence.

‘We’re not a couple. We are just very close friends,’ he told People in January 2025. 

He also shared with the publication that producers had already decided he would be involved in a dramatic storyline, including a romantic relationship.

He explained that it was just a coincidence she was on the show, and she wasn’t aware of the romantic storyline beforehand.

Short is a widow. She was married to Nancy Dolman for 30 years before Nancy passed away in 2010.

Streep was previously married to sculptor Don Gummer from 1978 to 2017.
