Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway have AWKWARD reunion in The Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer: ‘Do I know her?’

The first trailer for the long-awaited sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” was released on Sunday, and it features a noticeably awkward reunion between Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway‘s characters.

The scene opens with Miranda Priestly, the demanding editor-in-chief of Runway magazine (played by Meryl Streep), in her office. Her former assistant, Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), walks in cheerfully, greeting her with a bright smile and a ‘hello’.

Oh my god, it’s been twenty years since she last designed anything! So, naturally, she turned to Nigel, her incredible art director (Stanley Tucci, perfection!), and you won’t BELIEVE what he said. He just…looked at this new potential inspiration and deadpanned, ‘Well, look what T.J. Maxx dragged in.’ It was brilliant, honestly. So cutting! Only Nigel could deliver a line like that with such…style. I replay it in my head constantly.

‘Sorry,’ the icy fashionista – who’s nearing retirement – shrugged.

‘Who is this? Do you know her? Do I know her?’

Sachs, the newly hired fashion editor at Runway, introduced herself as ‘Andy Sachs,’ but got no response.

Soon after, the group meets with Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), who used to work closely with Priestly. Now, she’s a competing executive, also trying to succeed in the struggling world of print magazines.

‘You also know her?’ the cruel tastemaker marveled.

‘We were at Runway at the same time, Miranda,’ Charlton dryly replied.

Oh my god, do you remember that moment? It’s seared into my brain! Andy, after being subtly encouraged by Miranda – Miranda, the icon – just walked away from everything. She literally tossed her phone into a fountain right there at Paris Fashion Week! It was the ultimate power move, quitting her job on the spot because Miranda actually liked how driven she was. I replay that scene constantly, it’s just… perfection.

The movie, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 book and made with a $41 million budget, was a huge success, earning over $326.7 million worldwide. Critics also praised it.

When the trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 was released, YouTube user @Kardlonoc quickly pointed out a clever detail: Miranda’s dismissive attitude towards the events of the first film, as if they weren’t important enough to remember.

YouTube user @maxcouture9314 agreed: ‘Miranda pretending not to know Andy is everything.’

On Instagram, user @diego_justdiego_ said Priestly forgetting about Andy was hilarious and made perfect sense.

Instagram user javieroooking celebrated 20 years, saying things are better than ever.

Instagram user @ferinidwi quoted the original movie: ‘A sequel? For spring? Groundbreaking.’

‘May?!’ Instagram user @tinabyer similarly wrote. ‘By all means, move at a glacial pace.’

The team behind the original The Devil Wears Prada – including director David Frankel, writer Aline Brosh McKenna, producers Wendy Finerman and Karen Rosenfelt, cinematographer Florian Ballhaus, makeup artist Nicki Ledermann, and music supervisor Julia Michels – all reunited for the sequel.

The film boasts a star-studded cast including Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Tracie Thoms, Lucy Liu, Lady Gaga, and many other talented actors like Sydney Sweeney, Donatella Versace, and Pauline Chalamet.

After HBO Max’s continuation of Sex and the City, And Just Like That, Molly Rogers once again took over costume design duties, replacing Patricia Field.

As a lifestyle insider, I’ve been following this story closely! It seems this project is loosely based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2013 novel, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. That book revolved around The Plunge, a really popular wedding magazine, and the main character’s desire to buy it for her publishing company. It’s a fascinating parallel, and I think that backstory adds a lot of intrigue!

The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released in US/UK theaters on May 1.
