Here’s the gist:
Mercari’s flea market app is still pricing everything in good old Japanese yen, but now you can *pretend* to pay in Bitcoin. Sellers? They get paid in yen because Mercari’s got this fancy Melcoin sidekick that swaps your Bitcoin to yen faster than you can say “blockchain.”
Basically, Mercari wants a slice of the crypto pie without yelling “abstract math!” at its users. They’re dipping toes in the digital coin pool without dragging sellers into the deep end.
Oh, and because one shiny coin isn’t enough, they’re throwing XRP into the mix too. It’s like Bitcoin and Ethereum’s cool cousin who just showed up to the party bearing snacks. You can buy or sell XRP with Mercari points or Merpay balances, which is perfect because about 90% of users are crypto newbies who’d probably panic otherwise.
Mercari’s not flying solo here. Rakuten’s already been flirting with crypto for a while, letting users swap loyalty points for digital coins like it’s some kind of reward card rave. With these two tag-teaming, Japan’s turning crypto from “huh?” to “heck yeah” in your everyday shopping spree.
