Married at First Sight star Mel Schilling has sadly passed away at the age of 54, shortly after sharing news that her cancer had spread to her brain.
Gareth shared the sad news on Instagram Tuesday with a heartfelt message about his love for her and their 10-year-old daughter, Maddie.
He wrote: ‘Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love.
Even when I believed she’d lost the ability to speak due to cancer, she pulled me close in her last moments and whispered a message for Maddie and me – a message that will stay with me forever.
It exhausted her, but that small act of kindness was so typical of our little Melsie. Even while struggling, she was still thinking of Maddie and me.
‘This is a woman who became a new mum and a TV star at 42 — and nailed both.
Let me tell you, I’ve seen incredible strength in people, but this woman truly embodies it. Even during two years of grueling chemotherapy – times when just getting out of bed felt impossible – she never once complained. She faced everything with such courage, grace, and a genuine kindness towards others. What amazed me most? She didn’t miss a single day of filming. It’s a testament to her spirit, and honestly, it’s incredibly inspiring.
Many knew her as Mel Schilling, the beloved figure from Married at First Sight and a prominent face on reality television. But to her daughters, Maddie and me, she was simply ‘Melsie’ – a wonderful mother, someone we looked up to, and a cherished friend.
He went on to say, “Our family and her close friends are so grateful for the support we’ve received from everyone around the world.”
I’d also like to express my gratitude to our amazing Married at First Sight family—John, Alessandra, Charlene, Roxy, and Sophie—for all your support and understanding.
We’re incredibly grateful to Lee, Louie, Susy, and Ian at Channel 4/CPL. They truly went the extra mile for us, and we won’t forget their support.
‘To Sarah at InterTalent, not just an agent, but a true confidante.
I’d also like to thank Elizabeth Day, Mel’s podcast co-host and a close friend, for her kindness, support, and understanding.
Life has its ups and downs, offering both joy and hardship. But it’s also short and precious, and we can’t take tomorrow for granted. To remember Mel, please embrace life, cherish your loved ones, and don’t worry about the little things.
I shared fifteen incredible years with the love of my life, and being with her was the greatest honor. I’ll always cherish those years and be grateful for them.
‘Goodbye, my love. My one. Until we meet again.’
