Meet Yatzli: The Flirty Orlan Wizard Who’s Anything But Boring!

In simpler terms, Yatzli from the game “Avowed” is currently the most appealing character for February, due to her complex mix of action and emotional depth. As one of the four partners in the game, she assists players in investigating the Dreamscourge. In combat within “Avowed”, she can be likened to a ‘glass cannon’, meaning she possesses immense magical abilities, encompassing nearly any spells that players may imagine. However, Yatzli offers more than just a Wizard who enjoys casting fireballs; she’s also characterized by her age-related struggles and flirtatious nature.

Right from the beginning of Avowed‘s plot formation, Yatzli’s position as the expert in Godlessness has been firmly established. Details about the Godless are scarce, with only a few facts known: they once inhabited The Living Lands, do not follow any deities, which seems unusual given that this world is heavily influenced by gods. However, during the development process, she has transformed into the character we know today. Recently, Game Rant had an interview with associate narrative designer Katie Tenney about Yatzli, her evolution throughout development, and other related topics.

Yatzli: From Moodboard to Flirting to Age Angst

As a gamer, I’ve come across characters like Yatzli who truly stand out, and whether they’re seen as amazing or overwhelming might just depend on your point of view. She’s got a loud, vibrant personality that can be a tad obnoxious at times, flirts freely, and has a knack for making her presence known wherever she goes. If she’s not exploring the countless Godless ruins in The Living Lands, you’ll likely find her snuggled up with her loving partner in Fior mes Iverno. A quick glance at this Avowed companion is enough to tell you one thing: she’s far from the typical, dull academic type. As Tenney puts it, one of her aims was to ensure that Yatzli wasn’t just another boring scholar, a goal she certainly achieved!

From the start, it was decided that Yatzli would embody the character of the non-divine expert. The aim was to avoid making her a dull, academic stereotype. Early concept art featured images of Indiana Jones and Harley Quinn, as well as others, to create a unique and vibrant persona for her. We also included photographs of Anjali Bhimani, Yatzli’s voice actress, in the design process!

Initially, Yatzi drew inspiration from Indiana Jones and Harley Quinn, but it was her relationship with Giatta, an acknowledged comrade, and Fior mes Iverno that truly shaped her character. Moreover, like many people, she experienced the common struggle of not knowing one’s life path even in later years. These relatable aspects were key factors in Tenney establishing a bond with Yatzli.

Assuming control over her character was like inheriting a cherished friend. I delighted in emphasizing aspects that resonated with me: her playful and flirtatious demeanor, her heartwarming bond with her partner, and the poignant theme of lost opportunities as life progresses. Being a latecomer to higher education myself, I found affinity for characters grappling with uncertainties in their later years, and I look forward to readers joining me on Yatzli’s journey towards self-discovery!

How Yatzli Feels About Other Avowed Companions

Initially, Yatzli’s character was pre-established and has always been tied to the Godless realm. However, the events outside her individual tale underwent alterations, as Tenney clarified. This transformation is largely due to Yatzli’s evolving relationships in Fior and with Giatta, not forgetting the influence of The Envoy, the protagonist from ‘Avowed’. It appears that relationships play a significant role in Yatzli’s life, so we wanted to know her feelings towards her fellow travelers. As Tenney responded…

  • Kai: “Yatzli and Kai both handle issues similarly, and it leads to a relationship where they get along but also push each other’s buttons very easily.”
  • Giatta: “Yatzli and Giatta have known each other for years before the Envoy ever enters the picture. Yatzli’s kind of like Giatta’s fun aunt.”
  • Marius: “Yatzli likes to poke at Marius. Like a platonic version of teasing a classmate you have a crush on. She can see that there’s more to him and is showing her support in a roundabout way.”

Paul Kirsch, the narrative designer, mentioned that Giatta and Yatzli share a special bond as friends and intellectual rivals who engage in intriguing conversations around Eora’s oldest mysteries, reminiscent of campfire chats. Meanwhile, Tenney revealed that Yatzli would have been crowned “the one most likely to strike a Ken pose for her yearbook mugshot” in high school, making her an intriguing enigma indeed.
