MCU Needs More Marvel Spotlight Projects After Wonder Man Success

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced challenges with its recent Multiverse Saga. Compared to the hugely popular Infinity Saga, the last few years have been a bit inconsistent for Marvel. Though things seem to be improving, the franchise’s strong reputation has definitely taken a hit.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been really enjoying the ‘Wonder Man’ series. It’s part of the Marvel Spotlight line, which is great because these projects aren’t as tied into the huge overarching MCU story – you don’t need to have watched a ton of other movies and shows to jump right in. They really focus on the characters themselves, and honestly, they tend to be critically acclaimed. ‘Wonder Man’ just proves to me that Marvel should be doing way more projects like this, especially during this whole Multiverse Saga!

The MCU Needs More Marvel Spotlight Projects

Fans agree that Marvel needs more projects like those released under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner. While shows directly connected to the larger MCU, such as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, are good in their own right, Marvel Spotlight offers a better way to use Disney+. It focuses on smaller, character-focused stories that are perfect for television, instead of relying on the large-scale spectacle that’s better suited for movie theaters.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t used its ‘Marvel Spotlight’ branding very often recently. Besides Echo, only Wonder Man has been given this designation. While Wonder Man wasn’t a huge hit, it demonstrated the potential of focusing on smaller stories with less prominent characters – something Marvel Studios usually excels at.

Looking back, Marvel’s Special Presentations feel very similar to the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ projects, even though they came before the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ name was officially used with Echo. These projects focus on characters outside the main Marvel Cinematic Universe, telling self-contained stories that anyone can enjoy without needing to know prior events. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, while connected to James Gunn’s Guardians films, is also a smaller story centered on characters who don’t get a lot of focus in the main movies.

Marvel Spotlight delivers the kind of TV shows the Marvel Cinematic Universe needed all along. Previous Marvel TV efforts were often either overly complicated or didn’t deliver on their initial ideas. Marvel Spotlight takes a more grounded and sensible approach, and it’s a great way to move forward after the Multiverse Saga.

What Other MCU Characters Could Get Marvel Spotlight Projects?

Currently, Marvel doesn’t have any officially announced plans for new ‘Marvel Spotlight’ projects. But, after the positive reception to Wonder Man, Marvel Studios should definitely continue using this format. They should focus on telling smaller, character-driven stories like Wonder Man, and there are plenty of established MCU characters who would be great for this kind of project.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really hoping we get to see more of Isaiah Bradley’s story. He was introduced in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and will be in Captain America: Brave New World, and honestly, it feels like his experiences deserve a dedicated project. The idea of him being a secret Captain America during the Cold War, only to be abandoned by the US government? That’s powerful stuff, and I think a Disney+ miniseries – maybe under the Marvel Spotlight label – would be the perfect way to really explore that compelling narrative.

Following the success of Werewolf by Night, Marvel could further develop its supernatural elements. Characters with complex backstories would be perfect for the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ series, letting the MCU delve into their stories. The cosmic side of the universe also offers exciting possibilities with characters like Nova, Adam Warlock, and Eros.

Fans are eager for stories that delve deeper into street-level heroes. The upcoming special featuring Jon Bernthal as the Punisher is a perfect opportunity to launch the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner with this kind of gritty, grounded storytelling, and could lead to more tales focused on this side of the Marvel universe.

The Marvel Spotlight label has a lot of untapped potential, and Marvel should really take full advantage of it. Shows like these demonstrate that Disney+ is ideal for telling more complex, character-focused stories that wouldn’t quite work in movie theaters. It took Marvel Studios a while to realize this, but they can still benefit from it. Going forward, they should prioritize this approach with new Disney+ projects, truly utilizing the strengths of the television format.

Wonder Man is now available to stream on Disney+.
