McLaren is making a serious comeback to top-level endurance racing. They’ve revealed the MCL-HY, a powerful new hybrid race car built for the 2027 FIA World Endurance Championship. Developed jointly by McLaren’s racing and road car divisions, this car marks McLaren’s return to the highest level of competition since their famous win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995. In addition to the main race car, McLaren also introduced the MCL-HY GTR, a special, extremely limited-edition version for customers who want incredible performance on the track without the rules of competition.

Unlike the race-ready LMDh version, the MCL-HY GTR is powered solely by a powerful 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. Removing the hybrid components makes it significantly lighter and prioritizes a pure driving experience. Production is extremely limited, with just 30 to 35 cars planned. Owners will be invited to an exclusive program, giving them access to the same top-level engineering expertise used in the manufacturer’s racing programs. The first deliveries of these custom-built cars are expected in late 2027.

The competition is fierce in the FIA World Endurance Championship, and the stakes are incredibly high. The McLaren Hypercar Team, partnering with United Autosports, is preparing to enter two of its new MCL-HY prototypes. The initial test version of the car features a striking design inspired by the classic McLaren M6A, a tribute to the brand’s success in the Can-Am series during the late 1960s. Extensive track testing begins this month to ensure the car is fully developed and competitive before its first race.
