Timothy McGee’s future in NCIS will include a compelling personal story.
Though not one of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ initial team, Sean Murray’s character has been on NCIS since the very beginning in 2003. After over twenty years, he’s now the longest-running cast member as of the 2025-2026 season, and has experienced many changes throughout the show’s history. However, even with everything that’s happened, viewers were still shocked by the major plot twist revealed in the episode “In Too Deep.”
This episode of NCIS throws McGee into a complicated situation when the team investigates a case involving a scientist named Gloria, who he secretly dated 18 years ago—a relationship never mentioned in previous seasons. The case not only reunites McGee with an old flame but also reveals a shocking secret: he has a son, Matteo, with Gloria. The season 23 finale shows McGee determined to connect with his newly discovered son and build a relationship with him.
Sean Murray recently spoke with USA Today about the surprising revelation regarding McGee’s son on NCIS. He explained that this storyline won’t be dropped and that the show will delve into the consequences of this discovery. While McGee will eventually adjust to having an adult son, it’s still unknown how his wife, Delilah, will respond. You can find Murray’s complete statement below.
According to Murray, McGee has always valued being a good father, likely because his own relationship with his dad wasn’t ideal. He’s initially shocked to learn he has an 18-year-old son, but quickly adapts to the role of a father.
It’s still unclear how Delilah will respond, and this isn’t something we’ll just address once and move on from. We’ll definitely need to check back on this later.
Before the new season of NCIS began, there was a lot of speculation about a figure from McGee’s past making an appearance. Fans guessed it could be his sister or mother. Because McGee’s mother, Gloria, had never been mentioned on the show, it was hard to predict where the story was going. Ultimately, bringing this character into the mix is a welcome change for McGee. While NCIS previously used the ‘long-lost son’ storyline with Gibbs, this time the surprise wasn’t a false lead.
It’s a relief that NCIS isn’t dropping the storyline about Matteo just because McGee knows he exists. Often, long-running crime shows let these kinds of plots fade away when new cases take priority. It does make you wonder when Matteo will actually appear on screen, though. Given the shocking news about the agency potentially closing, CBS might decide to put this story on hold for a while.
Tim McGee’s career on NCIS has been stuck in place for a long time. The current structure of the team doesn’t offer much opportunity for him to advance unless there are significant changes within the agency – which is still possible, considering the current political climate. But even if he doesn’t get a promotion, McGee has a strong personal storyline to keep him engaged.
