We’ve been waiting desperately to see what the Daniels would do next after the Oscar-winning triumph Everything Everywhere All At Once, and the wait is one step closer to ending as it appears they’ve landed on the lead star of their new movie.
Back in March, it looked like Ryan Gosling would be teaming up with the filmmakers, but now it’s Matt Damon who is joining the new movie. Deadline reports that Damon is in talks to star in the as-yet-untitled “event film” from the Daniels, aka Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
The news follows Gosling’s exit from the movie, which was reportedly due to scheduling issues with filming set to start this summer in Los Angeles. Gosling has had a busy few months with the promotional tour for Project Hail Mary and finishing filming for Star Wars: Starfighter, and it was said that he needed a longer break (via Deadline).
Damon has also had a busy time of late, filming Netflix thriller The Rip and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey back-to-back. He’s soon set to take part in what is likely to be a massive promotional campaign for The Odyssey, with filming on the Daniels movie to start in later summer after that campaign is wrapped up.

We don’t have any official word on what the new movie is about, but according to a new report in The Hollywood Reporter, the movie involves “global warming, time travel, as well as a possible superhero angle”. It’s said to take place across two timelines – one in the 1980s and one in the present day.

Assuming the deal is finalised, Damon is set to play the father of one of the teenage characters in the 1980s timeline. It’s reported that the younger cast of the movie has been carried out, but they were waiting for the big-name roles, such as Damon, to be confirmed first.
While we don’t have any other official plot details for the movie, we do know that it’s set to arrive in cinemas on 19 November 2027, after being delayed from its original 12 June 2026 release date.
