Matt Damon admits Boston culture can be ‘abrasive’ – as he promotes new movie set in the Massachusetts city
As a dedicated follower of both cinema and the fascinating lives of these talented actors, I find myself captivated by the unique bond between Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, two Boston boys who have made their mark on Hollywood. Their friendship and shared roots are beautifully illustrated in The Instigators, a film that brings them back to their hometown for the first time in over a decade.
Matt Damon has tried to explain Boston from his hometown perspective.
In the current production titled “The Instigators,” Matt Damon, who played The Bourne Identity character at age 53, acts alongside his fellow Bostonian, Casey Affleck (age 48), from the same city.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m delighted to share that the latest movie I’ve been following was primarily filmed right here in Boston, Massachusetts – a city I last collaborated with Matt Damon on The Departed back in 2006. This time around, it feels like reuniting with an old friend!
In an interview with People, he remarked, “The playful perspective and outlook on life we have here are genuinely amusing. It’s enjoyable to appreciate it fully since you understand its essence.”
He continued: ‘It can feel abrasive to people who aren’t from here. But when you’re from here, it feels like, you know, a comfortable pair of socks.’
In my expert opinion, I’m excited to share that the upcoming movie I’ve been following is a joint creation by Casey and boasts production by Damon and Ben Affleck. This intriguing film revolves around two cunning thieves who find themselves on the run, with an unexpected ally – one of their therapists – after a heist takes an unexpected turn, as reported by Deadline.
Casey discussed his experiences filming the movie, which took place in his childhood home, decades following his relocation to the western coast.
“He observed that Boston is unrecognizable compared to our childhood memories, and it seems like an entirely different city. In fact, the entire nation appears to have gone through significant changes, with a notable shift in culture.”
He added: ‘On the other hand, it’s the place I still feel more at home than anywhere else.
Growing up, this particular place has left a profound impact on me that cannot be erased, regardless of its future transformations. It’s woven itself deeply into my memories and soul, becoming an integral part of who I am today. This location holds a special significance in my life as it shaped me in countless ways, teaching me lessons, offering comfort, and providing inspiration during critical periods of my development. No matter where life takes me or how much this place changes over time, I will always feel connected to it, carrying the memories and experiences it provided with me wherever I go.
Damon explained: “The Instigators is a depiction of an elevated reality we’ve constructed – it’s not the actual world, but it has a familiar feel to a Boston-style film.”
The film also stars Hong Chau, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for The Whale, and Richard Jewell star Paul Walter Hauser.
While it’s widely recognized that Matt has a stronger bond with Casey’s older brother Ben, they both have starred in nearly an equal number of movies throughout their careers.
In the films Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen, both of them were members of the titled criminal groups. However, Matt had a larger role alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt in these movies.
They also starred in Interstellar (2014), and Oppenheimer (2023) together.
Moreover, Casey is perhaps best recognized for his role in Good Will Huniting alongside his elder sibling and Damon, who jointly wrote the script and were awarded an Oscar for it.
