Matlock becomes the first renewal of the season (and it's deserved)

As a long-time fan of captivating television and a woman who has seen her fair share of underrepresented characters, I am thrilled about the renewal of Matlock for a second season. Kathy Bates’ portrayal of Matty is not just another reboot but a breath of fresh air in a sea of stereotypes.

Fantastic news for fans of Matlock! The CBS series has secured another season, making it the first show this television season to be renewed.

Kathy Bates has expressed that this series serves as her final act, but it seems she’ll postpone retirement for now since the quality of this show is exceptional. To put it simply, _Matlock_ surpasses typical reboots.

Actually, it’s not a complete restart as one might expect. In the debut episode, Matty admitted that her name shares similarity with a previous television series, which left some younger viewers puzzled. However, surprisingly, no one has yet raised questions about this potential connection, given the enigmatic nature of the character and Matty’s true identity.

Matlock deserves its second season renewal

In a fresh and engaging manner, Bates has skillfully crafted a captivating character that defies traditional stereotypes. For far too long, older women have been confined to supporting roles such as nannies or grandmothers. However, this series boldly challenges these norms by providing them with leading parts.

Matty appears to have emerged from retirement, but this isn’t entirely accurate. While she claims it’s due to caring for her grandson and financial struggles, these reasons are not the real story. In reality, she is happily married, dotes on her adorable grandson, and enjoys a substantial amount of wealth. However, there’s another motive driving Matty: seeking justice for the passing of her daughter.

The series highlights the often overlooked lives of older women, portraying them as charming yet sometimes forgetful individuals, with Matty’s ability to perceive them being a unique strength. It’s high time such representations were more prevalent in our media landscape. Traditionally, leading roles have been reserved for older men, but it’s crucial we extend this opportunity to women. Let’s strive towards television that is free from ageism and sexism.

To add to that, the sequential ratings unequivocally indicate the necessity of this series. Kicking off on Sunday, September 22nd, the debut episode drew in an audience of 7.7 million viewers and a 0.4 rating in the demo, as reported by TVLine. Initially, I had some concerns about the delay and shift to a new airing day for the second episode. However, it turned out that things weren’t nearly as dire as I anticipated. The demo rating held steady at 0.4, while the overall viewership dipped slightly to 6.4 million. Clearly, there is an appetite for this show, and it’s no wonder CBS has decided to renew it.

Matlock airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
