Okay, so this is HUGE news for any Firefly fan! Nathan Fillion just dropped that they’re actually working on an animated Firefly series, and it’s pretty far along in development. He announced it at Awesome Con with the whole original cast there too, which was amazing!
Most of the original cast is coming back, including Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin, all returning as their familiar characters.
Nathan Fillion’s production company, Collision33, is creating the animated series alongside 20th Television Animation, which owns the rights to the sci-fi story.

Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters, a married couple who both write and produce (known for shows like DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Agent Carter), will be running the show, and the first script is already finished.
Award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine has created initial concept art for the project and will soon begin pitching it to potential buyers.
What to Read Next
The new series will take place between the end of the original Firefly TV show in 2002 and the movie Serenity from 2005. This ensures the story feels like a natural continuation of what fans already know and love, rather than a complete overhaul.
Nathan Fillion, best known for his role as Malcolm Reynolds, hinted at some big news all week on social media, getting fans incredibly excited and speculating about what it could be. It seems his strategy definitely paid off.
As a huge Firefly fan, it’s amazing to see how much love the show still gets after all these years! Nathan Fillion recently said that the fans are the reason Firefly is still talked about, and he truly believes bringing it back is something we’ve earned. It’s so cool to hear him acknowledge how much we want more!
Man, I was totally bummed when I heard the Buffy reboot wasn’t happening, but then I rediscovered this amazing show! Empire Magazine said it was cancelled too soon, and honestly, they’re right. It’s become a real comfort watch for me and a lot of other people who grew up with TV in the 2000s – it kind of fills that void now that Buffy isn’t coming back.
It’s still unknown where the show will air, but with such a talented cast and the enthusiastic reaction from fans online, it’s expected to attract a lot of interest from broadcasters and streaming services.
Firefly first appeared on Fox in 2002, but sadly, it was cancelled after only one season – a decision many science fiction fans still regret. Over time, the show gained a dedicated following thanks to DVD sales, streaming services, and the later release of the movie Serenity.
Firefly is available to stream on Disney+.
