While Tom Holland’s initial films were enjoyable, it’s time to focus on Spider-Man’s origins as a neighborhood hero. After a decade in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man is ready to return to his street-level beginnings – and Marvel really needs that focus right now.
Marvel Needs a Street-Level Spider-Man
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward, a more grounded, street-level Spider-Man story is greatly needed. Recent Marvel projects, like Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Deadpool & Wolverine, have largely focused on large-scale, multiversal conflicts. Even Spider-Man’s latest film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, involved a massive, universe-spanning event with multiple Spider-Men teaming up.
The recent Spider-Man movies have focused too much on big, universe-spanning events and should return to the smaller, more personal stories that define the character. From the beginning, Spider-Man has always been a hero who protects everyday people in his neighborhood. While he sometimes teams up with other heroes and fights larger threats, his core identity is as a friendly, local protector.
Spider-Man has been Marvel’s most popular character for decades, and that popularity consistently drives strong box office numbers – his films consistently earn more than any other Marvel property besides The Avengers. Because of this, Spider-Man is currently Marvel’s most important franchise to maintain, even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is facing some challenges.
Marvel should avoid another big, multiverse-focused story in the next Spider-Man movie. This new film is a great opportunity to start over after the events of No Way Home and give fans the fresh direction they’re hoping for. If done well, it could be the start of the best chapter yet for Tom Holland as Spider-Man.
Spider-Man’s Street-Level Stories Can Help Revive the MCU
Even smaller, more personal stories can be just as thrilling as huge, action-packed blockbusters. Marvel could create a compelling Spider-Man trilogy focused on grounded, character-driven plots without needing to involve alternate universes, powerful cosmic events, or alien threats.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m loving how much depth they’re bringing to the street-level heroes and villains! It’s so cool to finally see characters like Scorpion, Tarantula, and Boomerang brought to life on screen. And Tombstone? He’s always been a bit of a hidden gem in the comics, and I think he could really become a major villain, right up there with Kingpin. It just shows how much potential there is in this corner of the Marvel universe!
These smaller, character-focused stories can actually be more engaging than the massive, action-packed Marvel movies we’ve seen a lot of lately. Without needing complex plots or huge stakes, they create a more personal connection, helping viewers genuinely care about the characters.
Marvel appears to be focusing more on personal, neighborhood-level stories, starting with the Born Again storyline and continuing with Brand New Day. Despite the common trend of escalating to larger-scale events, a smaller focus can be more effective—especially for Spider-Man. He’s always been strongest when dealing with local issues and protecting the people around him, rather than tackling world-ending threats.
Epic stories about the universe and alternate realities can be exciting, but audiences connect most with relatable characters and situations. People want to see themselves in Spider-Man, which is hard to do when he’s dealing with interdimensional travel. It’s time to focus on what makes Spider-Man special – being a helpful, local hero – and the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline is a great place to start.
