Marshals Officially Replaces Monica & She Couldn’t Be More Different From Kayce’s Late Wife

The character of Marshals is taking over from Monica Dutton, and is quite different from the late Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille. Luke Grimes is back as Kayce Dutton in this new series, which picks up a little over a year after the original Yellowstone ended. Since then, Kayce has faced personal tragedy with Monica’s death and has begun working with the U.S. Marshals. As he moves forward, he’ll likely meet new allies and enemies, and possibly find love again.

Although Marshals was CBS’s most popular new show during the 2025-2026 television season, it’s still developing its unique style. The show is carefully balancing the need to create something fresh with respecting its roots, a theme mirrored in Kayce’s story arc as he works through letting go of the past and moving forward. The episode “Family Business” marks a key step in his journey towards embracing the future.

Kayce Has His Very First Romance With Dolly After Monica’s Death

The sixth episode of Marshals, titled “Out of the Shadows,” focused on the one-year anniversary of Monica’s death. Tate and Kayce held a memorial service to remember her, though Grimes’ character was reluctant to participate at first, indicating he wasn’t ready to move on. Ultimately, he came to terms with his grief, symbolized by him giving away his late wife’s necklace. The seventh episode quickly moves Kayce forward, bringing him face-to-face with Dolly Weaver, the daughter of rancher Tom Weaver – the man the team rescued earlier in the season.

Dolly is clearly interested in Kayce, but their connection keeps getting sidelined by business talk. When John’s ranch hand, Weaver, offers to buy East Camp, it immediately puts Kayce, who dislikes dealing with business, off. Their potential romance gets a boost later when Dolly checks in with Kayce and he unexpectedly agrees to spend time with her. This is a big step for Kayce, especially considering his earlier conversation with Andrea about feeling guilty about moving on with someone new.

This conversation gives us valuable insight into how Kayce really feels about Dolly. While it doesn’t guarantee they’ll end up together in Marshals, it shows he’s definitely attracted to her and is seriously thinking about a relationship – which explains his inner conflict. Andrea’s advice simply opened him up to something he was already considering, making this development feel natural and almost unavoidable.

What Kayce & Dolly’s Potential Relationship Means For Marshals

While Beth and Rip’s relationship often steals the spotlight on Yellowstone, Kayce and Monica had a consistently stronger and more lasting love. Kayce went against many challenges to be with Tate’s mother, making her loss particularly painful for him. However, it’s unlikely Marshals will keep Kayce alone for long. He’ll likely find another partner, and currently, that seems to be Dolly. Interestingly, Dolly is very different from Monica – someone John III might have immediately favored for his son – yet Kayce is clearly attracted to her.

It’s still unclear if their relationship will last, but it seems likely to be a significant part of the story, especially since it’s connected to Tom’s plans for East Camp. While Andrea approves, it’s interesting to consider how Tate and others close to Monica might react if Kayce were to share his new romance. Adding to the tension, the Weavers’ questionable trustworthiness raises the stakes in this storyline.
