Viewers of Married At First Sight are criticizing new groom Tyson Gordon after his appearance on Monday’s episode sparked controversy.
Let me tell you, when I met this guy – a former soldier in his early thirties – he didn’t hold back at all. He was incredibly direct about his views, and made it clear he really doesn’t connect with what’s currently being called ‘woke culture’. He just doesn’t have the patience for it, honestly.
He also had an uncomfortable disagreement with his new wife, Stephanie Marshall, 32, about raising children and traditional gender roles within their marriage.
Viewers of Married at First Sight flooded X (formerly Twitter) with criticism of Tyson, accusing him of holding old-fashioned and problematic views about relationships and women.
One viewer expressed frustration with Tyson, saying that making opposition to progressive views your only defining characteristic is just as irritating as being overly concerned with those same issues.
Someone else suggested that Tyson’s expressed wish for his reality TV wife to be submissive was actually a way for him to exert control over her.
A newlywed named Tyson is looking for a wife who will let him take the lead. Some people interpret this as meaning he wants to dominate, control, and boss her around.
‘Marriage isn’t a combat zone, he should soften that militant approach.’
The criticism didn’t end there, as another viewer also disagreed with Tyson’s support for then-President Donald Trump.
Someone scoffed, asking why this person was concerned about the US president. They rudely told him to mind his own business, adding that neither of them considered the president their president, despite being American.
Someone else agreed, stating they immediately stopped listening once a speaker expressed support for Donald Trump, finding the situation embarrassing.
Another viewer of Married at First Sight commented that they believe this man is looking for a quiet, submissive wife who will simply obey him.
I’ve been following the reaction to Tyson’s comments, and it’s been… a lot! Some people immediately drew comparisons to figures like Andrew Tate, which is a pretty strong association. But honestly, what really seemed to rub people the wrong way wasn’t necessarily the comparison itself, but his insistence on having a very large family, even though Stephanie clearly wasn’t on board with that idea. It just felt a bit dismissive of her feelings, and that’s what sparked a lot of the negative reactions, in my opinion.
‘Tyson wanna carry and birth those 5 children, does he?’ one viewer asked.
Before the ceremony on Monday, Tyson explained to the show’s producers that he was looking for someone who shared his core beliefs and values. He wanted to find a partner with a similar moral compass.
He said he isn’t attracted to women who are openly progressive and have a noticeably different appearance, specifically mentioning green hair and being significantly overweight.
Honestly, it’s pretty clear what he doesn’t want. He’s explicitly said he’s not interested in women who’ve been with a lot of people, and definitely not in being a father figure – he’s stated plainly he’s ‘not here to look after someone’s kids.’ It’s a very direct, if a little harsh, preference.
Tyson then took umbrage with the fact that he was paired with an older woman.
He admitted he’d requested a younger partner and wasn’t pleased she was 32, explaining he’d been hoping for someone in their mid-20s.
He didn’t like Stephanie’s wedding vows either, criticizing her for seeming too assertive and not gentle enough.
The reception took a turn for the worse when Stephanie reminded everyone that Tyson had previously said he wanted to have five children.
She jokingly told a bridesmaid they were expecting five children, then turned to Tyson and playfully asked who he thought the father of those children would be.
When the bridesmaid asked Tyson about how they’d manage raising children with their hectic lives, he simply said, ‘Hire a maid.’
He also revealed to Stephanie that he thought child-rearing was no big deal.
‘Honestly, how hard can it be? It’s only this big,’ he said, holding out his arms.
‘You’ve just got to feed it, take it to the toilet, and that’s it.’
When Stephanie suggested Tyson become a stay-at-home husband, he immediately and firmly refused.
‘You may as well ask me to wear a skirt around the house,’ he said.
Tyson explained during a private conversation that he doesn’t want to be a stay-at-home dad, and he also expressed some discomfort with what he perceives as Stephanie’s strong, assertive personality.
‘Does the masculine energy make me unattractive to you?’ she asked.
He replied: ‘A little bit. I think there’s nothing better than a woman that’s submissive.’
Stephanie was upset by this and told the show’s producers, ‘It’s not the 1960s anymore, so this isn’t acceptable.’
Married At First Sight continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine.
