Margot Robbie’s historical romance film is now available to rent or buy online. Although the movie faced a lot of debate before its release, it ultimately proved to be a big hit.
Emerald Fennell’s new take on “Wuthering Heights,” starring Jacob Elordi, arrived in theaters on February 13th, perfect for Valentine’s Day. Following a successful run in cinemas, the historical drama became available to rent or buy online on March 31st, and quickly became popular on digital platforms.
As a total movie buff, I’m really seeing something special happen with this adaptation! It’s actually topping the charts on the Apple TV Store, even beating out Disney’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is pretty incredible. But over on Amazon, it’s a slightly different story – it’s holding strong in first, but The Housemaid is right on its heels in second place.
Margot Robbie’s Steamy Drama Was a Hit
The latest film version of Emily Brontë’s classic novel stars the actors known from Barbie as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. The movie tells the story of their intense and heartbreaking love affair.
This new adaptation of Wuthering Heights comes from director Emerald Fennell, known for Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. She’s worked with both Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi previously: Robbie was a producer on Fennell’s first film, Fennell had a small part in Barbie, and Elordi starred in Saltburn.
The show didn’t immediately win over critics. While it has a 57% ‘Rotten’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics acknowledged its beautiful visuals even if it wasn’t a completely accurate adaptation of the source material. Viewers, however, gave it a 76% rating, praising its ability to capture the spirit and emotional depth of the original Brontë story with flair and style.
The movie version of “Wuthering Heights” did well at the box office, earning $236 million globally on a budget of $80 million, which allowed it to break even. The film featured Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Shazad Latif, Martin Clunes, and Ewan Mitchell in its cast.
“Wuthering Heights” Was Controversial
Despite causing controversy and facing criticism, the film still managed to succeed. Many people predicted it would fail from the moment the cast was announced. Previous adaptations of the story, like the one starring Tom Hardy, also featured white actors as Heathcliff, but this new film didn’t address that issue. The original novel describes Heathcliff as having dark skin, yet the actor chosen, Jacob Elordi, is white.
The movie presented the story as a passionate love affair. But the original novel actually explores a harmful and unhealthy dynamic between the two main characters, despite their romantic connection.
The director and writer discussed her approach to the adaptation, revealing she’s been a fan of the original Gothic novel for years. She admitted the film isn’t a strict retelling, hence the use of quotation marks around the title. In an interview with Fandango, Fennell shared, “This book is incredibly important to me, and it means a lot to many others.”
Fennell explained that it’s impossible to directly adapt such a complex and challenging novel like this one. She isn’t aiming to create a faithful reproduction of Wuthering Heights, but rather her own interpretation of the story.
“Wuthering Heights” is available to rent or purchase on digital platforms.
