So, everyone’s been buzzing about the Malcolm in the Middle revival, and honestly, I was right there with them! It’s been almost 20 years since we last saw the Wilkerson family, and I was so excited to see what they’d been up to. But a big question kept popping up: what about Dewey? Erik Per Sullivan, the actor who played him in the original series, didn’t return, and it caused quite a stir. People have been debating if the recasting was worth all the talk. As a huge fan of the show, I’ve been following the drama closely, wondering if they could recapture that Dewey magic.
Per Sullivan chose to continue his studies at Harvard instead of taking a lucrative offer to return to his famous role. He’s largely stayed out of acting and the public eye since Malcolm in the Middle ended, which didn’t surprise his former co-stars, Frankie Muniz and Bryan Cranston. Ultimately, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark’s portrayal of Dewey in Life’s Still Unfair showed that all the concern over recasting was unnecessary.
The ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Revival Underutilizes Caleb Ellsworth-Clark’s Dewey

Caleb Ellsworth-Clark does a great job playing Dewey in Life’s Still Unfair. He really captures what fans would expect from the character after all this time, and the writers who worked on the original Malcolm in the Middle deserve credit for how well they’ve developed him in the revival. When the show begins, many viewers immediately think about Erik Per Sullivan, who originally played Dewey, especially since the first episode includes old footage of him.
Ellsworth-Clark’s portrayal of Dewey is remarkably similar to the original – in looks, voice, and mannerisms. However, many viewers find this new version somewhat underwhelming. The biggest issue is that Dewey isn’t used enough in the show. Across all four episodes of Life’s Still Unfair, Ellsworth-Clark’s Dewey primarily appears through video calls. The revival explains his absence from Lois and Hal’s anniversary party, and the party itself, by saying he’s performing for royalty overseas. This fits the character well, and audiences would probably have been disappointed if Dewey hadn’t continued to pursue music, given his talent in the original series.
Although we see Dewey with his family in a few flashbacks during Life’s Still Unfair, the anniversary party doesn’t feel like a true family gathering. There’s probably a practical reason for this – perhaps the actor’s availability was limited due to other commitments. While it’s understandable that a sudden focus on Dewey wouldn’t have worked, especially with a recasting, it’s still disappointing for viewers that he wasn’t more involved.
The way Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair concludes leaves the door open for another season, and possibly more appearances from Christopher Masterson as Dewey. Although the recasting of the character is a bit disappointing, it doesn’t detract from enjoying the revival overall, but it does make the whole situation feel less impactful.
