Malcolm in the Middle star Frankie Muniz clarifies claims about his memory loss

Frankie Muniz, known for his role in ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ has clarified that he doesn’t actually have significant memory loss related to filming the show, despite previously saying he did.

After experiencing several mini-strokes and concussions, the 40-year-old actor reported in 2017 that he had lost his memories of growing up.

Muniz recently explained on the Inside of You podcast that his earlier comments about memory problems were misinterpreted and weren’t meant to be taken as they were presented.

He explained that the story about that issue was misinterpreted, and he wanted to clarify what actually happened.

The former child star now chalks up his forgetfulness to simply having a ‘bad memory.’

He explained that recent stories claiming he doesn’t know his wife are due to his poor memory. “I just have a bad memory,” he stated.

The entertainer said he ‘can remember lines’ but struggles to ‘absorb so many things.’

He explained that he’s been constantly busy and having exciting experiences ever since he was a child.

I’ve always been an actor, which means I spend every day stepping into someone else’s shoes, experiencing their feelings – whether it’s joy, sadness, anger, or even romantic connection.

The former child star explained that once a scene is finished – signaled by the director saying ‘cut’ – it’s quickly put behind them. They move on immediately to the next task, whether it’s a different emotion, a new day of filming, or a different character.

I think part of the problem is I’m so quick to dismiss things and move on before I really process them. It’s like I immediately tell myself, “I’m finished with that,” without giving it much thought.

In December 2021, the entertainer – who later became a race car driver in 2024 – appeared on Steve-O’s Wild Ride! podcast and discussed rumors about his health.

He said he’d been diagnosed with migraine auras after seeing multiple doctors.

Muniz also admitted he doesn’t ‘remember much’ of the show that made him famous.

Looking back on his role as Malcolm in the show, he admitted it feels strangely distant, like it happened to someone else.

You know, it’s a funny thing getting older. Sometimes I feel a pang of sadness when little memories surface – things I should recall, moments I wish were clearer. I’ve been incredibly lucky to experience so much in life, to pursue almost every dream I’ve had. But honestly? The details are fading. It’s a little bittersweet realizing that while I’ve done a lot, remembering it all is becoming a challenge. It makes you appreciate the present moment, that’s for sure.

I was a huge fan of that TV show, and I remember watching Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 to 2006! Frankie Muniz was amazing, and the whole cast – Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Erik Per Sullivan, and Justin Berfield – were just brilliant together. It was such a funny and heartwarming show!

The actor is starring in a new miniseries called Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which will begin streaming on April 10th.

The story, told over four episodes, centers on Hal and Lois, Malcolm’s parents, who insist that both he and his daughter come to their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.
