Danny Hewitt, a groom on Married At First Sight, has explained what really happened when his bride, Bec Zacharia, unexpectedly told him she loved him – a moment that shocked viewers during the season.
Danny, 34, told the Daily Mail he was shocked by the confession, saying he didn’t see it coming at all.
‘Normally when a girl tells you they love you, they give you like breadcrumbs beforehand,’ he said.
Bec didn’t offer any clues or warnings. It was completely unexpected when she finally revealed it.
The surprising event happened right after their weekend getaway, which seemed to have improved their previously troubled relationship.
Bec was eager to move forward in their relationship, but Danny admitted he needed more time to feel ready.
‘Bec’s obviously a bit ahead of me with the feelings,’ he admitted.
Love can’t be forced – you either feel it or you don’t. I’m just letting things happen naturally and seeing what the future holds.
According to Danny, their romantic getaway played a major role in intensifying Bec’s feelings.
I’ve been following this couple’s journey closely, and let me tell you, it hasn’t been easy! Their honeymoon was really rough, and they’ve had a lot of friction with the other people involved in the experiment. It’s been a bumpy ride from the start, that’s for sure.
After the retreat, everything changed. Danny stood up for Bec when things got intense and helped her get away from the stressful situation.
He believes that moment changed the way she saw him.
‘She mentioned that I was a safe space, which was a nice thing to hear,’ he said.
‘I think that’s what really amplified Bec’s feelings.’
Danny also joked that their romantic weekend together may have sealed the deal.
He chuckled, saying it would be difficult to imagine any woman spending a romantic weekend with him and not falling in love.
Danny addresses the partner swap drama
Danny shared his thoughts on the show’s producers trying to force a confrontation between him and his rival, Gia Fleur, after weeks of building tension between them.
Danny says Gia has been dodging any chance for them to talk things out, even though the show’s producers have tried multiple times to get them together.
‘Every time they try and do it, I show up and Gia doesn’t,’ he said.
‘If that’s not the sign of a guilty person, I don’t know what is.’
However, the outspoken groom insists he has already moved on from the feud.
‘I’ve buried the hatchet with Gia. I don’t hold grudges. I wish her all the best,’ he added.
Danny said he would have been happy to talk with Gia and share his true feelings about her relationship with Scott.
‘I would’ve been very positive towards her,’ he said.
‘I love the way Scott’s taken her daughter into his life. I think they stand pretty united.’
But he also hinted the pair could have delivered some brutally honest advice to each other.
We would have competed very aggressively because we don’t particularly like each other.
The ‘receipts’ drama dividing the cast
Honestly, I’m living for the drama between the brides! It’s just been one thing after another with these leaked texts and screenshots. It’s totally taken over the whole show, and I can’t look away! It’s like, who leaked what to whom? It’s consuming me!
But Danny says he believes viewers are already over the drama.
‘I think everyone in Australia is sick of these receipts. Who cares?’ he said.
He also suggested some of the brides have been more focused on the drama than their relationships.
Honestly, as someone who’s been following this experiment closely, it really frustrates me to see some of the women getting so caught up in appearances and the drama of the group texts. It feels like they’re prioritizing how things look to others, instead of actually building genuine connections with the guys they’re supposed to be falling for. It’s like the ‘relationship’ is becoming secondary to the perception of a relationship, and it’s a little sad to watch.
If they had focused that much effort on their relationships, this season could have been their best one yet.
The surprising similarity between two couples
Danny noticed a similarity between his relationship with Bec and what was happening with another couple on the show.
He thinks both women are a bit more emotionally connected than their partners, and this difference might cause problems as the experiment goes on.
‘I’ve always said Bec and Gia could be long-lost sisters,’ he joked.
‘The girls are that tiny step ahead of us and it does play a factor.’
Danny laughs off fashion criticism
The groom, known for speaking his mind, also responded to the criticism he’s gotten about his unique style.
And according to Danny, he has no plans to change his style anytime soon.
‘England has David Beckham, who’s a fashion icon,’ he said.
I have a unique sense of style when it comes to English fashion. While some people don’t appreciate my choices, I dress however I please and I’m not bothered by their opinions.
The season is full of drama, and Danny suggests there’s more to come when it comes to his relationship with Bec – viewers haven’t seen everything yet.
Based on the recent confession of love, their relationship is likely to continue with many unexpected turns.
