Lupita Nyong'o, missing Chadwick Boseman, might shy away from 'Black Panther' — but not her grief

As a fan, I deeply empathize with Lupita Nyong’o as she navigates her life journey, which is marked by profound love, loss, and resilience. Her ability to openly confront grief and honor the memories of those she’s lost is truly inspiring.

Dealing with the passing of Chadwick Boseman in 2020 continues to be a journey for Lupita Nyong’o, one that she doesn’t shy away from facing head-on.

During a heartfelt Q&A at the BFI London Film Festival on a Sunday, I found myself emotional as I spoke about my “Black Panther” co-star who sadly passed away. Our discussion, focusing on my career journey, showcased some of my most impactful roles, such as my work in “The Wild Robot” and, notably, the 2018 Marvel phenomenon, “Black Panther.” I confessed to Grace Barber-Plentie, my moderator, that I haven’t watched the film since Chadwick’s demise, and in that moment, the memories came flooding back.

After giving herself a moment to gather her emotions, Lupita Nyong’o shared her sentiments, stating that “Grief is just the love… with nowhere left to go.” She then dabbed at her eyes as she spoke. Despite Barber-Plentie’s prompting to move on, Nyong’o requested to continue discussing the topic, expressing a desire to delve deeper into it.

She went on, as reported in another video posted by the Hollywood Reporter, ‘I don’t avoid tears or sorrow; I simply learn to live with them.’ The memories of the past will always be intertwined with the love that grew.

Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away on August 28, 2020, following a secret struggle with colon cancer at the age of 43. His co-star Lupita Nyong’o, who played Nakia opposite Boseman’s T’Challa in “Black Panther”, paid tribute to him on the fourth anniversary of his death.

Grief evolves, it’s more like a journey than a permanent state. Grieving isn’t a sign of weakness or lack of faith; it’s the cost of loving deeply. This is what Lupita Nyong’o wrote as she paid tribute to Chadwick Boseman on Instagram, quoting words whose author remains unknown. ‘Chadwick Boseman, always remembered.’

Nyong’o recently pondered on her relationship with Boseman, following their conversation at BFI, which was shortly after she discussed another kind of grief in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. She revealed to the magazine that she is currently single, having made this statement in an article published on Wednesday, less than a year since whispers of romance between her and Joshua Jackson from “Dawson’s Creek” began. She mentioned that her cat, Yoyo, whom she took in after conquering her fear of cats for the film “A Quiet Place: Day One,” has been instrumental in helping her deal with the separation – a split which appears to be her second within a year.

She expressed that if she finds herself in another romantic relationship someday, it will only be due to the special influence of her pet.

“I was ready to shut that door and lock it and bolt it. He has ensured that my heart remains open.”
