Lucy Mecklenburgh and fiancé Ryan Thomas ‘delay their wedding plans to remain financially independent after she became concerned over his money struggles’

It’s been seven years since Ryan Thomas proposed to Lucy Mecklenburgh in Positano, Italy, but they haven’t gotten married yet.

I’ve been following their story for years, and it’s so sweet to see them still together! They actually met on that crazy Bear Grylls show, Celebrity Island, way back in 2017, and they’ve always said the reason they haven’t gotten married isn’t a lack of love, just that life keeps happening and getting in the way of planning it all.

Ryan and Lucy got engaged in June 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic a year later meant they, like many other couples, had to postpone their wedding plans.

They started a family with two children, Roman, age six, and Lilah, age three, so they had to postpone their wedding plans.

It’s now clear why Ryan and Lucy haven’t gotten married yet. Sources say Lucy wants to maintain her financial independence, given Ryan’s past money problems.

According to a source, Lucy comes from a wealthy family – her father, Paul, owns a lot of property and his daughters, including Lucy and her two sisters, are set to inherit a significant amount of money. Lucy is very good with finances and always takes her father’s advice.

Growing up, she learned the value of money and how to manage it wisely. When she began earning from TOWIE, her father immediately guided her in making smart investments.

Ryan has openly admitted he hasn’t always been good with money and has made financial mistakes. Because of this, Lucy is hesitant to fully combine their finances through marriage, as that would legally tie them together financially.

They do share finances and own property jointly, but I suspect Lucy is taking steps to safeguard her own money. Ryan’s worked hard to overcome past financial problems, and Lucy is very proud of that. However, if he were to face financial trouble again, it could negatively impact her credit score and her own financial stability, especially if they were to get married.

Even though Ryan was earning a good salary – around £100,000 a year while working on Coronation Street – he filed for bankruptcy in 2013 before he met his partner.

He accumulated a large debt of £40,000 due to unpaid taxes, leading to bankruptcy. Although he’s no longer bankrupt, the experience continues to affect him.

It was recently discovered that his company, R James Thomas Ltd – which handles income from his television appearances and sponsorships – held only £1 in its accounts last year.

Financial records submitted to Companies House reveal the company had only one pound in its account for the year ending January 2025.

At the time, the books also revealed he owed more than £30,000 of a Covid Bounce Back Loan.

In the UK, bankruptcy usually disappears from your credit report after six years, but some of the rules and limitations connected to it can remain in place for as long as 15 years.

If you’re applying for something and they ask for detailed financial information, you need to reveal any past bankruptcies, no matter how old they are.

But another source told the publication that Lucy and Ryan aren’t married because they’re perfectly content with their current life. They’re enjoying being parents to their young children and are both focused on their careers.

Daily Mail have contacted Lucy and Ryan’s representatives for comment.

Ryan and Lucy’s relationship almost didn’t happen. He revealed that just months before proposing, he was actually considering ending things with her.

Ryan revealed on his podcast, co-hosted with his brothers Scott and Adam, that he originally intended to end things with Lucy after their first date following the reality show’s filming.

He confessed he was bothered by Lucy’s attraction to him and planned to end things before they could get serious, fearing it wouldn’t work out.

When he finally met Lucy on their date, he was struck by how amazing she looked and how genuinely kind she was, and he knew he wanted a serious relationship with her.

Ryan’s brother Scott began: ‘Ryan asked you to be his girlfriend…’

“Actually, it was our first date,” Lucy interjected. Ryan quickly added, “Though, hold on – we’d already been stranded on an island together for a month!”

Scott said, looking uncomfortable, “Wait, how did that happen? This is so embarrassing!” This made Adam and his wife burst out laughing.

Lucy explained that they’d known each other for about two months, and had spent a month of that time together on the island.

Scott questioned, “Didn’t you ask if we were official?” just as Ryan stated, “I’d never call myself old-fashioned.”

Lucy explained that things took a turn for the worse when he told her he’d arranged to meet her – supposedly because she was working in Manchester – only to reject her.

Ryan jumped in, explaining he’d been thrown off by someone being attracted to him. He admitted that once he realized they liked him, he lost interest, saying, ‘It just didn’t feel right.’

‘Then when I went to meet her…’ he added, as Lucy said: ‘It’s mad isn’t it.’

Clarifying, Scott said: ‘So you were going to break it off and then you saw her.’

Ryan continued, saying she looked amazing. He described how they shared a kiss in his brother Adam’s car, and he remembered thinking, ‘This is it,’ even though he couldn’t explain why she had her shoes off and her feet on the dashboard.

Bursting out laughing Scott added: ‘Ryan loves feet! That’s actually probably true.’
