Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum’s New Aragorn Actor Officially Confirmed In Major Recasting

The new stage production, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is returning audiences to the world of Middle-earth, featuring a new actor as Aragorn and other beloved characters.

The new movie, Hunt for Gollum, arrives in theaters on December 17, 2027. It’s the seventh live-action film in the Lord of the Rings series, and the eighth overall when you include the animated prequel The War of the Rohirrim released in 2024. Andy Serkis, who has famously played Gollum since The Two Towers in 2002, is directing. The screenplay is by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens – longtime collaborators with director Peter Jackson on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies – along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.

As a huge fan of Lord of the Rings, I was thrilled to hear more about The Hunt for Gollum! Warner Bros. just announced the cast, and it’s amazing – Andy Serkis is, of course, back as Gollum, and Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, which is fantastic. Even better, Elijah Wood is returning as Frodo! But here’s a surprise: Jamie Dornan, who you might know from Fifty Shades of Grey, is taking over the role of Strider (Aragorn) from Viggo Mortensen. We found out last week that Viggo wouldn’t be back, but I definitely didn’t expect Jamie Dornan! They’ve also added Kate Winslet as Marigol, Leo Woodall as Halvard, and Lee Pace as Thranduil, making for a really exciting lineup.

More to come…
