After the huge success of Godzilla Minus One in 2023, fans eagerly awaited a sequel from director Takashi Yamazaki, especially after a hint at the end of the first film. Now, three years later, the first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero suggests the monster will return, even more dangerous than before. The trailer gave audiences their first glimpse of Godzilla’s updated look and revealed that the threat will extend beyond Japan’s borders.
Fans were thrilled at the possibility of Godzilla facing another monster in the sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, something he’s done many times before in films. Early promotional images, which only showed lit-up clouds and the logo, sparked a lot of guessing about which classic monster from Toho might appear. Many believed Hedorah, the notorious Smog Monster, would be included, especially since the director had expressed interest in adapting the character and some thought the clouds represented its toxic pollution. However, a new detail in the Godzilla Minus Zero teaser suggests a different, well-known enemy of Godzilla will be featured instead.
A Scene of Possible Gravity Manipulation Could Indicate That King Ghidorah Is in ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’

Midway through the preview, we see Kōichi Shikishima flying a plane through floating wreckage held aloft by a strange, blue energy. Though the shot is brief, it’s obvious something is manipulating gravity, lifting pieces of buildings thousands of feet into the air. Considering Godzilla and Toho’s past films, one monster immediately comes to mind as being linked to gravity control: the three-headed King Ghidorah.
King Ghidorah is widely recognized as Godzilla’s greatest enemy and has been a key part of the Godzilla story ever since he first appeared in the 1964 film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster. This terrifying alien monster is always portrayed as a world-ending threat, making him a perfect fit for a movie aiming to showcase a danger even greater than the original Godzilla, who famously destroyed Ginza and troubled the Shikishima family in Takashi Yamazaki’s critically acclaimed film.
King Ghidorah is famous for his gravity beams – powerful, yellow energy blasts fired from each of his three heads. He’s also shown the ability to control gravity and magnetic fields, particularly in older films. While it’s unclear what caused the flying debris in the trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, many fans believe King Ghidorah is the most likely culprit, given his history in Toho’s Godzilla universe.
Takashi Yamazaki Has Already Produced an Interpretation of King Ghidorah

Godzilla fans shouldn’t be surprised to see King Ghidorah appear in Takashi Yamazaki’s new film, as he’s repeatedly expressed his interest in featuring the three-headed monster. In fact, Yamazaki has already created his own version of both Godzilla and King Ghidorah for the “Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle” flying theater ride at Seibuen Amusement Park in Japan, which opened in 2021. The ride simulates a battle between his versions of the monsters, and his Godzilla design was similar to the one later used in “Godzilla Minus One.”
Some fans might be upset to see King Ghidorah again, hoping for a different monster like Hedorah or Anguirus. However, if director Yamazaki does include him, it’s likely to be a truly impressive version. Yamazaki has proven he can make terrifying and powerful creatures, as he did with Godzilla, and he could bring that same skill to the god-like Ghidorah. It’s important to remember that Yamazaki hasn’t confirmed a second monster will appear. The strange antigravity and magnetic powers seen in the trailer might actually be new abilities for the larger, spiked Godzilla, rather than belonging to another creature.
