Longlegs and the 5 best Neon horror movies to watch right now

As a horror film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the genre’s ability to explore the darkest recesses of the human psyche, I cannot help but be captivated by Neon’s unique and thought-provoking offerings. Having had the privilege of witnessing some truly shocking and psychological horrors in my life, I can wholeheartedly attest that the films produced by this innovative production company never fail to deliver a chilling and unforgettable experience.

In recent years, Neon, an independent film production and distribution company, has given A24 a tough competition with their unique, sometimes startling, and consistently original films that have left audiences delighted. Alongside critically acclaimed titles like “Parasite,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and “Triangle of Sadness,” Neon also offers an impressive collection of horror movies that are guaranteed to captivate any horror genre enthusiast. As a long-time fan of Neon, I automatically add any horror film bearing their logo to my watch list.

A fresh Neon production titled “Longlegs” in the horror genre has generated quite a buzz. This film is truly impressive. However, it’s not the only excellent terrifying tale Neon has to offer. Here are six of their best horror movies – don’t forget “Longlegs” makes the list.

Longlegs (2024)

Filmed under the guidance of Oz Perkins, the son of renowned actors Anthony Perkins and Berry Berenson, “Longlegs” stands out as a remarkable horror movie production from the last ten years. Featuring Maika Monroe in the lead role as FBI agent Lee Harker, this film is a must-watch for horror enthusiasts. Lee is tasked with solving a long-running case of murder-suicides and is suspected of possessing psychic abilities. Working hand in hand with Agent Carter, portrayed by Blair Underwood, they embark on a mission to identify the elusive letter writer who signs as “Longlegs.” I strongly advise approaching this film with minimal knowledge of its plot. I myself opted not to preview the trailer prior to watching it, and my decision proved rewarding.

After watching Perkins’ 2015 film “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” I’m convinced that “Longlegs” showcases his distinctive style in dark and suspenseful cinematography and storytelling, leaving an ominous feeling right from the start. I can’t wait to revisit his other projects now! Monroe delivers an impressive performance in “Longlegs,” joined by a remarkable turn from Nicolas Cage. Notable horror actresses Alicia Witt and Kiernan Shipka also shine in their roles. If you’re a fan of the horror genre, don’t miss out on “Longlegs”!

Crimes of the Future (2022)

David Cronenberg’s film preceding this year’s “The Shrouds,” which is called “Crimes of the Future,” offers a captivating and surprising experience that keeps viewers hooked from beginning to end. In this movie, Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux portray an artist duo who conduct surgeries on humans in front of a live audience. As expected from Cronenberg, this film involves body horror. If the idea of body horror makes you uncomfortable, “Crimes of the Future” may be unpleasant for you. However, if, like me, you have a penchant for the disturbing and enjoy being grossed out, I strongly suggest giving it a try.

With Mortensen and Seydoux, Kristen Stewart features in “Crimes of the Future” as an employee of the National Organ Registry, intrigued by the proceedings. The film’s neo-noir ambiance instantly hooks you, while the movie itself is a unique and unforgettable experience. Though not among Cronenberg’s most renowned works, it is certainly one of his finest.

Infinity Pool (2023)

As a gamer, I can’t help but be excited about the latest offerings in the horror genre, and Cronenberg Films’ “Infinity Pool” is no exception. Brandon Cronenberg, son of the horror maestro, has collaborated with Neon on this film not once, but twice now, making me believe they’re really nailing it in this genre. And let me assure you, I’m not exaggerating when I say that “Infinity Pool” is one of my favorite horror movies from the past decade. Neon seems to be on a roll with this, and I’m totally here for it!

After an unfortunate incident happening outside the resort during the night, the couple comes to realize that the fictional country they are on vacation in is quite unsettling. However, they soon discover that the people they are now interacting with are even more disturbing.

The Lodge (2019)

Looking back a few years, “The Lodge” is a chilling and unsettling psychological horror movie that serves as a reminder of the darkness within children. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the filmmaking team behind “Goodnight Mommy,” direct this spine-tingling tale. A dad takes his fiancé on a Christmas trip with his two kids, who are still grieving the loss of their mother. The children dislike their future stepmother and make no secret of it. However, when their father is forced to leave for work, the three must learn to live together. As the temperatures drop and their mental state deteriorates, they face even greater challenges.

Riley Keough, an exceptional actress, portrays Grace, Riley’s fiancé, with a hidden past. She was raised in a cult and lived through a harrowing incident as the sole survivor. The talented cast includes Richard Armitage, Alicia Silverstone, Jaeden Martell, and Lia McHugh. _The Lodge_ is both chilling and filled with apprehension, a movie I believe deserves more recognition.

Possessor (2020)

Brandon Cronenberg’s next directorial work after his debut is titled “Possessor” (2020), which has received significant recognition and praise from cinema enthusiasts. This bold sci-fi horror film introduces us to Tasya Vos, an assassin portrayed by Andrea Riseborough, who possesses the unique ability to take over other people’s bodies to execute her targets. With such a captivating premise, this movie is undeniably original and bizarre in the most intriguing ways. The film offers a raw and immersive experience that keeps you hooked—even when it feels uncomfortable or unsettling. Prepare yourself for an edge-of-your-seat journey filled with unexpected twists that will leave a lasting impression.

The film “Possessor” features the excellent performances of Christopher Abbott, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Sean Bean in supporting roles, in addition to its intriguing plot. The film not only keeps you hooked with its gripping assignments for the protagonist but also delves deep into her internal struggles.

Titane (2021)

Towards the end of the list comes “Titane“, an unpredictable film by Julia Ducournau that ingeniously blends body horror, psychological drama, sci-fi, and mystery. The story follows Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), a young woman with a titanium plate in her head, as she transforms from a stripper to a fugitive serial killer. As the plot thickens, it becomes clear that this movie offers an intriguing rollercoaster of twists and turns. Notably, it was awarded the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, a fitting recognition for its unexpected yet merited success.

Two films comprise Ducournau’s cinematic portfolio, the latest being “Titane” (2021), making her a rising talent in filmmaking, definitely worth observing closely. In her acting debut for a feature film, Rousselle delivers an astounding performance in “Titane.” The production boasts renowned actors Vincent Lindon and Garance Marillier in secondary roles.
