However, spectators worldwide have numerous compelling reasons to watch the Play-In qualifiers: observing the unique playstyles of lesser-known regions and cheering for determined underdogs making their way to the pinnacle.

MAD Lions KOI (MDK) secured the third European spot at the League of Legends tournaments, thanks to their remarkable comeback in the second half of the Summer Split and outstanding performance at the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) Season Finals. Vikings Esports earned a berth in the LoL Worlds 2024 Play-In with the second Vietnamese seed, an impressive feat following their team’s revival in 2023. Match recap: MDK vs VKE

In the inaugural match of LoL Worlds 2024, MAD Lions KOI got off to a fantastic start, performing exceptionally well in both games. Although the first game didn’t exhibit a commanding first half like the second one, their overall performance was impressive enough to establish them as the superior team. This hard-earned victory for MDK brings them one step closer to qualifying for the Swiss stage.

In actuality, Vikings Esports didn’t play like hapless victims; their courage and ingenuity were quite evident. Keeping tabs on them during the lower bracket matches is definitely intriguing.

Game 1

MDK emerged victorious in this match, yet it wasn’t an effortless win. The Vikings Esports team effectively prevented their opponents from accumulating a significant lead in kills and gold – despite constantly pursuing MAD Lions KOI. The Vikings pulled off some impressive moves, such as snatching the Baron during a covert skirmish when all adversaries were absent or capturing a Dragon in what appeared to be an impossible situation.

One big push deleted all the doubts, though. MAD Lions KOI got one point in the match score, but Vikings Esports proved their explosive strength and brave approach.

Game 2

In the first half of the game, MDK exhibited remarkable dominance, comparable to a powerful gang, sweeping through everything in their path with ease. Conversely, Vikings showcased their creativity, particularly in devising strategic team-fight positions during defense. Despite being significantly outmatched, VKE managed to hold their own for an extended period, putting up a surprising resistance.

As a gamer, I’ve got to hand it to MAD Lions KOI – they didn’t get cocky after snowballing the might of their champions. Fresskowy wielded Syndra like a seasoned pro, and she seemed poised to make a comeback in the League of Legends Worlds 2024 matches. Nidalee and Jinx were smart picks too, packing quite the punch when needed. In the end, it was MDK who struck, capitalizing on a tiny slip-up by VKE in positioning, and taking down their Nexus.

Thanks to skillful play with these picks, MAD Lions KOI won this game and match. Next, they play in the qualifying match, on Sept. 27. Vikings Esports fell to the lower brackets, and their next match is on Sept. 28.

MAD Lions KOI and Vikings Esports: A chance for a breakthrough

For both squads, Worlds 2024 presents an exceptional opportunity to showcase their skills on the global League of Legends stage. However, their prospects come in varying shades:

MAD Lions KOI hail from one of the major League of Legends regions, but they’re often not seen as formidable opponents compared to teams from the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) and the League of Legends Pro League (LPL). However, some European teams can still produce impressive results – for instance, reaching the top 4 at Mid-Season Invitational in 2024. Unfortunately, MAD Lions KOI haven’t yet reached that level. They’ve been attempting to qualify for the World Championship since 2020, and their best achievement so far was a top 8 finish in 2021. Finishing 12th-14th in 2023 is not what European fans would typically consider a successful tournament run for MAD Lions KOI.

In the world of esports, Vikings Esports emerged and disbanded in 2018. However, with fresh talent, they were reborn as VKE in 2023. In the Vietnam Championship Series (VCS), they climbed to the second spot in both halves of 2024, making them the runner-up. This year, only GAM Esports outperformed VKE in the VCS. Moving from being the second-best team in a smaller region to showing promise at Worlds? That’s an achievement many dream of!
