Lisa Wilkinson sets the record straight on the rumours that have haunted her – and shares how she reclaimed her life: ‘I was sick of me’

Lisa Wilkinson is breaking her silence after a long period away from public attention. She’s not only addressing the media coverage she received, but also sharing the significant personal changes she’s experienced since then.

After a long break from the public eye, the well-known broadcaster, age 66, is speaking out about returning to work, the difficulties of being constantly watched, and a surprising hobby that gave her strength.

She told Stellar magazine she was likely both a little nervous and incredibly thrilled to have worked on such an amazing story.

Her new book, ‘The Titanic Story Of Evelyn,’ is a truly remarkable tale, and she says working on it came at the perfect moment in her life.

Wilkinson admits that being constantly involved with lawyers isn’t a fulfilling way to spend your time.

I started this project unexpectedly, right when a lot of personal legal issues were happening. It wasn’t something I sought out; it just sparked my interest one day as a way to cope with getting through a difficult time.

Getting lost in another person’s story was a welcome escape. I was constantly in the headlines at the time, and honestly, I was tired of reading about myself. I can only guess how overwhelming it must have been for everyone else in the country.

Wilkinson’s book centers around Evelyn Marsden, the sole Australian survivor of the Titanic disaster.

It’s a story that resonated with Wilkinson, quickly becoming more than just historical research.

Wilkinson explains she felt constantly struggling against overwhelming obstacles, which is why she dedicated the book to women like Evelyn who have faced similar challenges.

‘That was the moment when I just fell in love with her and just knew that I had to do this story.’

You know, learning about the Titanic – and the sheer scale of the loss, over 1500 lives – really shifted my perspective on things. It’s a powerful reminder to appreciate what we have and to focus on what truly matters.

Going through something so tragic really helps you realize what’s truly important and makes your own problems seem smaller.

The last few years have been challenging for Wilkinson. She faced a lot of public attention and discussion after her 2021 interview with Brittany Higgins on the television program, The Project.

But she insists she never regretted telling the story.

‘I don’t think I ever had that thought, but I certainly had some very rough days,’ she says.

It always felt like a relatively minor concern – just hoping to protect my work, not facing a life-or-death situation like being on the Titanic.

Looking back, she says one outcome still stands out.

‘So when I look back on having done that story, that’s probably the thing of which I’m most proud.’

As for Higgins herself, Wilkinson’s words are simple but heartfelt:

I truly admire Brittany’s strength. She’s faced so many challenges, and she always finds a way to keep going. I have a lot of respect for her.

Wilkinson explained her sudden departure from The Project in 2022, stating it wasn’t her decision to leave.

‘No, not at all. Channel 10 took me off air. It was their decision, not mine,’ she said.

Being forced to announce her departure live on air was another moment she had to push through.

I didn’t have any options. There are times in life when you’re forced into something, and all you can do is brace yourself and keep going. That’s exactly what I did.
