Daniel Mays, known for his role in Line of Duty, will appear in a new Channel 5 drama. He’s one of several actors—including Amit Shah from Happy Valley and Joel Fry of Game of Thrones—starring in Wild, a comedic drama set in the Scottish Highlands. This is part of Channel 5’s upcoming series of one-off television films called Play for Today.
The story follows three longtime friends – Lou, Dev, and Alistair – who continue their yearly tradition of camping in the wilderness. What starts as a fun trip filled with jokes, reminiscing, and casual video recording quickly turns into a struggle for survival when they get lost, run out of food, and their friendships are tested.
I was so excited to hear more about Wild, and the description really grabbed me. They say it’s a funny, moving, and honestly, a bit disturbing look at what happens when pushing your limits turns into something dangerous. It also seems like it really gets into how harmful ideas about what it means to be a man are contributing to the growing mental health crisis, which is a really important conversation to have.
Wild has been written by Lewis Wren, who previously worked on Netflix’s Treason.
Paul Testar, a commissioning editor at Channel 5, announced a new series of standalone dramas as part of the Play for Today strand. He said the initial Play for Today films last year were very well-received, and this new selection continues that positive momentum.
