Lily Allen says children should receive lessons on childbirth at school after defending her decision to give her daughters a private education
As a fervent fan of Lily Allen, I can’t help but admire her wisdom and courage. With a life that spans across continents and experiences, she’s not just a musician or an actress, but a woman who’s been through the ringer. Her recent call for children to learn about childbirth and parenting in school resonates deeply with me.
Lily Allen proposes that schools should offer classes on childbirth and parenthood to students during their education.
In her youth, the singer had the opportunity to attend a grand total of 13 schools, one of which was Hill House School, where Prince Charles himself once studied as a junior.
On a recent episode of her “Miss Me?” podcast, Lily expressed her thoughts about essential subjects kids should learn in school to prepare them for their adult lives.
As a conscientious supporter, I firmly believe in educating our children about significant life aspects such as taxes, finances, marriage, and divorce. It’s crucial they understand the potential consequences of these agreements that shape our lives.

Previously, I found myself torn between my reservations about the private school system and my choice to enroll my girls, Ethel, age 12, and Marnie, age 11. However, I stand by my decision, acknowledging that each educational path offers unique benefits.
As a devoted fan, I found myself resonating with a listener’s concern about enrolling their child in a private school. In response, the artist known for “The Not Fair” track shared her thoughts, offering comfort and insight.
She stated, ‘Both public and private schools can be excellent, so it’s not just a matter of choosing one over the other. It depends on the options that are accessible to you based on where you reside.’
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can share that during our time in London, my daughters and I were fortunate enough to be part of an exceptional educational institution. Fast forward to our move to America, they initially attended public schools here until the completion of their elementary years. Afterwards, we opted for private education.
The reason wasn’t due to my opposition towards public schools, but rather because of the lottery system in Brooklyn, our residence. The school assigned to Ethel was problematic for us as it was located too far and I had reservations about its quality, considering it not to be a strong educational institution.
In other words, she had that choice available, and we had alternatives, but I chose to make that particular decision.
Previously on the show, Lily expressed her embarrassment about her limited education, confiding in fellow host Miquita Oliver: ‘I didn’t finish school. I stopped at 15 without a single GCSE or any qualifications, and I’m deeply ashamed of that fact.’
Initially, the idea of pursuing a career in midwifery or obstetrics appealed to me greatly due to my fascination with the field. However, given that I lacked the necessary qualifications such as GCSEs and A Levels, it appeared overwhelming and seemed like an unattainable goal. In truth, I found myself unwilling to put in the effort required.
Instead of going, I felt rather self-conscious about the idea of having to study for my A Levels alongside eighteen-year-olds when I was well into my thirties. Frankly, it wasn’t something I wanted to do.
Lily, wife of David Harbour from Stranger Things, explained back then why she moved her children to the United States with her in 2020 as well.
She mentioned that one cause for her relocation was the sense of being in a setting that fosters growth and prosperity for her kids, as it seems to be significantly more supportive.
A possible rephrased version could be: “For instance, I took on a role in a play despite having no acting background or previous theater involvement.”
When I share this with Americans, their response is often: “Wow, that sounds amazing! You’re bound to learn a lot and excel at it!”
Then, when I’d share this with the English folks, their reaction was often similar to: “You mean a theater performance? Have you had experience with something like this before? Aren’t you apprehensive about it?”
