Liam Neeson, 72, says he’s retiring from action movies

Liam Neeson, 72, says he's retiring from action movies

As an ardent admirer of Liam Neeson’s illustrious career, it’s hard to fathom the impending curtain call on his action-hero era. Born and bred in the land of giants (or so it seems when you stand next to him), this Belfast-born actor has traversed a path few could ever dream of.

Liam Neeson seems ready to close the curtain on his action-hero era.

The venerable Irish actor, who kickstarted his acting journey on the stages of Belfast’s theaters, has made public his intention to retire from action movies following an exhilarating comeback, starring in films such as Taken, Star Wars, and The Grey.

As I feel my energy waning, I can’t help but acknowledge the reality that the physical challenges are becoming too much. It’s clear to me now that there will come a point when certain stunts might exceed my capabilities. So, it seems, reluctantly, it’s time for me to gracefully step away from the limelight.

‘I’m 72—it has to stop at some stage,’ Neeson shared with People on Wednesday.

It’s impossible to deceive the audience. I prefer not to have Mark Vanselow perform my action sequences on my behalf.

Liam Neeson has suggested that his last action movie might be released by 2025, though he hasn’t yet specified an exact date.

‘Maybe the end of next year. I think that’s it,’ he said.

In theaters starting November 1, his upcoming movie titled “Absolution” showcases the story of an older gangster seeking reconciliation with his offspring while attempting to make amends for previous wrongdoings.

He’s also just finished filming a reboot of the classic comedy The Naked Gun.

Hailing from Northern Ireland, Liam began his film journey with the 1978 movie Pilgrim’s Progress.

His significant acting debut was in Schindler’s List, a role that brought out a powerhouse performance from him and landed him a nomination for the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actor at the age of 41.

1999 marked his entrance into the Star Wars cosmos, taking on the role of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn within The Phantom Menace.

After making his debut in Star Wars, Neeson’s acting career started to focus more on action movies. This was evident in films such as Batman Begins and Taken, the latter of which made him a surprising action hero even in his late fifties.

The Taken series propelled him into a fresh phase of fame, solidifying his standing as the preferred leading actor for high-octane action movies such as The Grey and Non-Stop.

The retirement announcement comes nearly a year after he revealed he almost portrayed James Bond, a role that could have changed his life in more ways than one.

Back in 1993, prior to the release of Schindler’s List, I crossed paths with Natasha Richardson on Broadway while we were both starring in Anna Christie. We ended up tying the knot in 1994, but during a candid chat with Rolling Stone, I revealed that if I had accepted the role of James Bond, our nuptials would have been off the table – a clear indication of her strong preferences.

As Neeson reminisced, he mentioned his acquaintance with the Broccolis – a renowned production duo who were instrumental in the Bond series, including Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli and his daughter Barbara. Following Schindler’s List, they extended an offer to him for taking on the role of James Bond.

Liam found himself drawn to the idea, but during the production of the movie Nell, Richardson made it clear that if he took on the role of James Bond, they wouldn’t be tying the knot.

She presented me with an unyielding demand akin to a classic James Bond scenario, and I could tell she was serious about it. Liam Neeson went on to explain his understanding of her reasons for not wanting him to accept the role.

He confessed that it’s likely she made many of her choices influenced by the attractive women she encountered while traveling from one country to another, both getting into and getting out of bed.

In the end, the role went to Pierce Brosnan, who debuted as 007 in 1995’s Goldeneye.
