Leigh-Anne Pinnock praises ‘incredible’ Jesy Nelson as she makes rare comments about her former Little Mix bandmate amid baby twins’ ‘heartbreaking’ diagnosis

As a longtime fan, it was so lovely to hear Leigh-Anne Pinnock speak so warmly about Jesy Nelson! She called Jesy ‘incredible’ in a recent interview, and it really warmed my heart to see her acknowledge their history together. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about them, so this was a really nice moment.

The 34-year-old singer contacted a former bandmate after learning her twin daughters have a serious genetic condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1), which may mean they won’t live past the age of two.

Leigh-Anne recently told Kent Small on The Smallzy Show that she and her former bandmates—after Jesy left in 2020—continue to support one another.

She was deeply upset, describing the situation as terrible. She confirmed she had tried to contact the person involved, and felt it was a truly awful experience.

I’m really impressed with how she’s raised awareness about this issue. That’s what makes our connection so unique – we’ll always support each other.

Jesy and her former fiancé, Zion Foster, had twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, in May 2025, earlier than expected.

This year brought heartbreaking news: both babies were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1), a serious genetic condition affecting their muscles.

This condition causes muscle weakness by damaging the nerve cells that control muscles in the spinal cord. The most common and serious type, Type 1, typically leads to a life expectancy of under two years if left untreated.

Leigh-Anne had previously contacted Jesy, explaining that it’s always been vital for them to support one another.

She told Heart Breakfast’s JK and Kelly Brook that they contacted her as soon as they learned about her twins, calling the situation ‘devastating’.

We’re all supporting her, and I admire her courage. Of course, Jade, Perrie, and I are very close friends too.

We’ve always been there for each other, which has been incredibly important. After spending so much time together, we’ve become like sisters, and that bond means a lot to us.

In addition to being a new mom, Jesy is actively advocating for the NHS to include screening for SMA1 in the standard newborn heel prick test.

She believes that if her twins had received the £1 test and been diagnosed and treated sooner, they might not have needed to have their legs amputated.

The celebrity has already gathered over 100,000 signatures on a petition asking the government to quickly fund a specific initiative. Because of this large number of signatures, Parliament is now required to discuss the issue.

While continuing to advocate for newborn screening and manage her daughters’ health, Jesy has put her music career on hold.

During an interview on Heart FM’s breakfast show with Amanda Holden and Jamie Theakston, she explained that while she wouldn’t rule out making music again, her daughters are currently her top priority.

To be honest, I’m completely focused on my children right now and simply don’t have the bandwidth for anything else. They are my priority, and I’m dedicated to fighting for a change in the heel prick test and helping them thrive – that’s what matters most to me.

‘Because that’s going to determine their future. That’s my main focus right now.’

She previously told the Daily Mail that raising the twins was a very emotional experience, with some days being incredibly difficult and others a little easier.

Jesy shared that she and her ex-partner, Zion, didn’t anticipate having to care for their children like this, and covering the costs of their medical care is a constant challenge.

She described the daily medical treatments her babies receive as deeply painful, explaining that their cries and screams make her feel like she’s the one causing them harm.

Jesy Nelson described her daily life as incredibly intense, telling the Daily Mail that it’s something you really have to experience firsthand to understand. She said words just can’t capture how demanding it is.

To be honest, I’m still finding it really difficult to manage all the medical things I need to do. It’s something I never anticipated dealing with, and it’s been a real challenge.

As a lifestyle expert and a mom myself, I completely understand how tough those early days can be. You’re doing all the right things for your little one – things you know will help them grow – but when they’re upset and crying, it feels incredibly counterintuitive, like you’re the one causing their distress. It’s heartbreaking to have to be the one to push through that, when all you want is to comfort and nurture them. It’s a really common feeling, and it’s okay to admit it’s hard.
