Kristen Stewart feels ‘haunted’ by Princess Diana and says the mere thought of the late royal leaves her in tears ‘at any moment’

Kristen Stewart says she’s deeply affected by Princess Diana, feeling as though the late royal constantly stays with her, and often finds herself unexpectedly crying when she thinks about her.

In the 2021 film Spencer, the 35-year-old actress played Princess Diana, who tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36.

Kristen shared that she gets emotional whenever she remembers Diana, and she can’t drive through London or Paris without thinking about the Princess.

She shared with the Daily Telegraph that she still feels deeply affected by Princess Diana. She explained that driving in London – or Paris – always brings Diana to mind, and that the immense love Diana gave continues to move her to tears even now.

The American actress was surprised and worried when Pablo Larrain, the director of ‘Spencer,’ chose her to play the British royal. She even asked him to reconsider and find another actress, but he wouldn’t change his mind.

She explained that she told Pablo he was being unreasonable and needed to find someone else, but he wouldn’t listen. She also pointed out significant differences between herself and him.

It was her striking appearance. Specifically, her eye color – I have green eyes, but she’s known for her bright blue eyes, which are the same shade as her ring. That made me wonder if we should choose a green stone for her engagement ring.

People were trying to overwhelm me, but Pablo told me to let go of material possessions and focus on what truly mattered – my inner self.

Director Pablo, 49, continued to work with Kristen as Diana because he felt they shared similar life experiences.

Similar to Princess Diana, Kristen Stewart was very young and inexperienced when she became famous in the Twilight movies during the 2000s and 2010s, and she faced a lot of attention from photographers.

Near the conclusion of filming ‘Spencer,’ Kristen Stewart revealed she felt emotionally empty, a feeling she connected to Princess Diana’s experience as her marriage to Prince Charles was ending.

Kristen received her first Oscar nomination for this role, but Jessica Chastain ultimately won the award for her performance in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

Spencer focuses on three days of the late royal’s life in 1991.

This follows Kristen’s disclosure that she was advised to keep her relationships with women private. She decided to come out because she wanted to live authentically and fully, rather than hiding a part of herself.

The actress is currently married to screenwriter Dylan Meyer. She has also previously dated French singer Soko and model Stella Maxwell.

She publicly identified as bisexual in a 2017 interview. However, later that year, during a Saturday Night Live performance, she jokingly referred to herself as ‘so gay’ while speaking about Donald Trump.

Kristen explained to Linsey Davis on ABC News Live Prime Time why she decided to talk about her sexuality on the show.

She explained it wasn’t really about revealing personal details of her relationship, but rather about recognizing that some people live limited lives because they feel they have to hide who they are.

Kristen revealed that people close to her – those she loved and trusted – cautioned her against publicly displaying her relationships with women, suggesting it could harm her career. She explained that she’d received advice from people she knew, loved, and still trusts, who believed her career would improve if she kept those relationships private.

I responded by questioning whether they were asking me to accept a limited existence and support a system that intentionally excludes others. I explained that I couldn’t agree to that.

The director of ‘Chronology of Water’ explained that the media attention on her relationships made it clear to everyone what was happening before she publicly came out.

She explained that she wasn’t interested in simply appearing in a comic book. Her real concern was avoiding a retreat from the realities of the world around her.

I want to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment. That’s why I felt it was important to be open about my relationship – I was already comfortable holding my girlfriend’s hand in public.

She explained that she’s never held back in relationships out of fear of being vulnerable. In fact, she actively wants people to truly know her.

Honestly, it just felt right, like they’d already said everything I needed to know. I didn’t feel the need to add anything, you know? But then it hit me – this could be the key for other people, the thing that finally lets them understand too. It felt huge, like it could open things up for everyone!

Kristen began dating her now wife in 2019 and they married in April 2025.
