Actress Niecy Nash, known for her work on Ryan Murphy’s show featuring Kim Kardashian called All’s Fair, recently shared her difficult experience in Mexico during a surge of violence from drug cartels last month.
Oh my god, you will NOT believe what happened in Puerto Vallarta! It’s my absolute favorite place, and it was totally rocked by this huge thing. Apparently, the army – and get this, even American intelligence! – took out El Mencho, the head of the Jalisco Cartel. It was insane! Total chaos broke out. I’m so worried about the city and everyone there, but honestly, it’s also… kind of a crazy story. I’ve been following everything about this for days now!
Tourists were left stuck as the situation rapidly worsened: fires broke out throughout the town, hotels locked down, stores were looted, and cartel members blocked the roads leading to the airport.
Nash was one of the many travelers stranded in Puerto Vallarta. She was there celebrating her 56th birthday with her wife, Jessica Betts, their three adult children, and a group of friends.
Nash and Betts were running out of food, so they went to a nearby W Hotel to get something to eat, as Keke Palmer shared on her podcast.
Okay, so things didn’t start smoothly. The hotel staff were totally unwelcoming, but we weren’t letting that stop us! We kind of… slipped inside, and immediately met this amazing couple at the bar. Honestly, it was the start of the wildest night! We were on a mission to find what we needed, and things just escalated from there. It was chaotic, exhilarating, and I wouldn’t have traded it for the world!
Betts and Nash were asked to join a couple for a romantic encounter, but they declined. However, they still asked for the party’s room number.
They arrived at the party and immediately took the opportunity to order food, requesting a full meal from room service to bring back home.
Nash clarified that she and Betts used cash to pay for their items, ensuring the charges wouldn’t accidentally appear on another couple’s hotel bill.
When their hosts suggested they might be interested in swapping partners, Nash and Betts politely declined, saying something like ‘Perhaps another time,’ and then quickly left with their room service order.
Nash explained to Palmer that the people they were with were very drunk and didn’t realize they’d ordered so much food to their room. They ended up paying for it all, which allowed them to bring some food home for their kids. Palmer jokingly responded with a playful comment about the situation.
On February 25th, three days after the operation that targeted El Mencho, Nash shared a video on Instagram saying she had safely left Puerto Vallarta.
I just wanted to express my sincere thanks to everyone who supported us during a really challenging time. Your prayers, kind messages, phone calls to the US Embassy, and willingness to share your contacts meant the world to us and truly helped us get through it all. I’m so grateful for the incredible outpouring of support!
She mentioned the W Hotel wouldn’t serve her food, which she felt was rude, and she was upset that a tour company wouldn’t refund her money after she had to cancel a boat trip.
She acknowledged facing difficulties, but expressed immense pride in the resilience of Black people. She emphatically stated that despite everything, they will continue to find and hold onto their joy.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! I just saw the cutest video of Mookie Betts, Dusty Baker, and the whole crew singing the Golden Girls theme song – “Thank You For Being a Friend”! It was at the airport in Puerto Vallarta, and honestly, it made my day. They were all just having so much fun, and now I can’t stop smiling thinking about it! It’s the sweetest thing ever.
Despite the chaos of the crowded airport – with cancelled flights, long lines, and not enough places to sit – we were incredibly happy, Nash wrote.
She said people were captivated – they stopped, looked, and even started clapping to the music! It just proves that the theme song from The Golden Girls is the best!
Last week, Nash kept the birthday festivities going with a party celebrating Michael Jordan, planned by WP Miller Special Events at the SLS Beverly Hills hotel.
She explained to People that her trip to Mexico was frightening because she allowed her children to invite their friends along, meaning she was responsible for other people’s kids as well.
It was frightening, but thankfully we all made it out okay—we owe everything to a higher power. That experience reminded me to cherish every moment and celebrate life’s simple joys.
