Kiln is the new game from Double Fine and Xbox Game Studios, following their popular title Keeper. However, Kiln offers a very different gameplay experience. It’s a four-versus-four fighting game where players control unique characters made of pottery, and this pottery theme is woven throughout the game’s rules and mechanics.

Double Fine, the studio behind the popular game Psychonauts and its excellent sequel, first gained recognition over twenty years ago. While they’ve created other fan favorites like Brütal Legend, many consider Psychonauts their best work. They recently announced Kiln, a game that’s been in development for a while, at the Xbox Developer Direct event in January.

Just a couple of months after it was first shown, the game Kiln will be released on April 23, 2026. While several other games are launching in April, Kiln won’t be competing for attention on its release day with major titles like Pokémon Champions, Pragmata, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and Saros. Kiln will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC all at the same time on April 23.

Kiln will be available for $19.99. A special ‘Fired Up’ edition, which includes some bonus in-game content (details below), costs $29.99. Importantly, Kiln won’t have any microtransactions; you can only earn the in-game currency, called Chips, by playing matches. Plus, Kiln will be available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers at launch, alongside 17 other games added to the service in April.

Kiln Edition Differences

The Battle-Hardened Pottery set includes unique pots designed by the team at Double Fine. The rest of the Fired Up items are used to customize them. What’s special about the three Battle-Hardened pots is that they each have a Double Fine maker’s mark, showing they were created by the studio.

Pre-ordering any edition of Kiln entitles you to the following in-game items:

Kiln Gameplay Details

Games that are constantly updated with new content (often called “live-service” games) frequently face criticism even before launch, especially if they enter crowded game genres. However, Double Fine seems to have come up with something genuinely new with Kiln. They describe it as an “online multiplayer pottery party brawler,” where players create their characters from scratch using a virtual pottery wheel. The shape and size of your creation directly impact its stats and abilities. While you can decorate your character with glazes, stickers, and other attachments, these are purely cosmetic and don’t affect gameplay.

So, in Kiln, the big team mode is called Quench – it’s a 4v4 brawl where you’re trying to douse the other team’s fire with water. Basically, you grab water and haul it to their kiln. It sounds simple enough, but there’s a catch! I can pick a character that carries a ton of water, but they’re super slow and might not even fit through some of the shortcuts on the map. I’ve seen some gameplay where they have these sponge hazards too – you can fill them up with water to block pathways, which could really mess with the other team!

I’ve been hearing people compare Kiln to hero shooters, and I can see why! It’s all about team fighting in arenas and focusing on objectives. But here’s the really cool twist: instead of picking a character with set abilities, it’s the shape of your pot that determines what you can do. And these abilities aren’t just for attacking – they’re super versatile! Like, I have one that turns my pot into a sword and lets me dash, which is great for quickly going after someone, but also awesome for just getting to a better position on the map. It’s really strategic!

Kiln offers a unique strategic element with three interchangeable pots players can switch between during matches, potentially leading to a lot of tactical adjustments. The developers at Double Fine believe the game has a high skill ceiling.
