Kate Mulgrew doesn’t think Star Trek will ever be oversaturated
As a lifelong Trekkie who’s been following the franchise since the original series premiered back when I was still a toddler with a pacifier and space blankets, I can confidently say that there is no such thing as too much Star Trek. The universe of Star Trek has always been a beacon of hope, decency, and exploration for me during my formative years, and it continues to inspire me even now.
It appears that one reason suggested for the low viewership of Star Trek: Enterprise is viewer fatigue, as there had been a continuous stream of Star Trek series from 1987 to 2005, followed by a 12-year break before Star Trek: Discovery premiered. During this gap, J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin timeline films were released starting in 2009, so fans only went four years without any new Star Trek content. This could have led some to believe that perhaps the audience was simply overwhelmed with too much Star Trek.
Since 2017, an abundance of Star Trek series have premiered, with more on the horizon, potentially causing some to question if we might reach a point of too much Star Trek in the science fiction market, leading to oversaturation. However, if you pose this question to Kate Mulgrew from Star Trek: Prodigy, she would confidently refute it, stating in an interview with Variety that there will always be room for more because “there is no limit to this type of decency, this level of excitement.”
Mulgrew went on to explain that [Star Trek] is how we should be behaving in this world.
There will never be a saturation point, because there is never a saturation point for this kind of decency, this kind of excitement. This message is good, and it’s profoundly important. This is truly what we aspire to be, the best of ourselves.
It sounds a little Pollyanna, but when it’s as beautifully created as ‘Prodigy’ is, and as the other shows are, it’s not Pollyanna at all. It’s how we should be behaving in this world.
Star Trek still contains plenty of conflict as there will always be, in whatever universe or timeline, someone or some people who want to dominate. But the interaction between the Trek characters is a good model for us all. And it’s the main reason that Star Trek will never go out of style.
