Journey fans might be stunned by what the band is forced to do

Journey continues to perform well live, but they largely need to maintain the lineup they’ve had for the past two decades. This includes their singer, Arnel Pineda, who appears reluctant to re-sign contracts, yet feels obligated to do so.

According to a recent report in Rolling Stone, Pineda attempted to leave the band several times, fearing he couldn’t handle the demands of another tour. However, the band reportedly didn’t honor his requests to resign. Rolling Stone is generally a reliable source for this type of information.

Pineda explained that he’d let band members know he wasn’t certain about a new tour and was trying to get more information. He was dealing with a difficult divorce and wasn’t sure he was emotionally prepared to tour and perform for large crowds.

Journey keeps touring because they simply have to

It’s crazy – he even officially resigned, but nobody ever got back to him! Apparently, there’s a really solid reason for that. The band is contractually obligated to take Pineda on tour with them, thanks to their deal with AEG, a huge tour production company. It seems like even if the rest of the band wanted to play shows, they couldn’t without him, since he’s been their lead singer since 2007.

Essentially, AEG’s financial investment gave them significant control over the current Journey tour, which is being billed as a farewell run. The band had agreed to a contract with AEG and, as a result, couldn’t change what happened, even if they disagreed with it.

Regarding recent news about Neal Schon of Journey, he explained in a Rolling Stone interview that even if he’d known Arnel Pineda was considering leaving, he wouldn’t have been able to change anything.

Just to be clear, I never stopped anyone from making their own choices. However, we were all told by our team that our touring agreements had certain requirements we needed to follow.

Because of problems with his voice, Journey has had to make some changes to their concerts. On about six songs, other band members are now singing lead vocals, even at the beginning of the show. Thankfully, they’re finding ways to include Pineda in performances despite his vocal difficulties.
