After a disastrous initial release that made it notorious, the movie is now surprisingly popular, climbing to the top of streaming charts.
Despite flopping badly in theaters two years ago, the sequel to the 2019 Oscar-winning film Joker, titled Folie à Deux, is now surprisingly popular on streaming. It’s currently at No. 57 on HBO Max’s list of most-streamed movies and is doing even better on Netflix, where it’s the ninth most-watched film.
The movie Joker: Folie à Deux is getting a lot of attention online, likely due to the awards season. This weekend brings both the Razzie and Academy Awards, and while the film aimed for recognition from the Academy, it gained much more notoriety with the Razzies.
Unlike the Oscars, which celebrate the best films, the Razzie Awards highlight the worst. At the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards for 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux led with the most nominations and ultimately won two awards: Worst Screen Combo and Worst Remake, Sequel, or Spinoff. Madame Web prevented a complete sweep by winning three awards of its own.
Joker: Folie à Deux Is Still the Worst Comic Book Movie of All Time
People constantly argue about what makes a truly awful movie. Everyone has different standards, and while some films are just poorly made, others are more frustrating because they had promise. Joker: Folie à Deux stands out as the worst comic book movie ever made because it had incredible potential but ultimately failed to deliver.
After the success of the 2019 film Joker, Folie à Deux had the potential to be a great sequel. However, Warner Bros. released a strange musical that essentially ignores everything that happened in the first movie, and doesn’t even make sense when looking back at it.
Critics haven’t been kind to Joker: Folie à Deux, giving it a low 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, the film has earned $208 million, even with its high $200 million budget. The good news for some is that because of the film’s poor reception, a third Joker movie is unlikely.
