Johnny Depp targeted by criminal who reportedly stole over £520k over two years

Reports indicate that Johnny Depp was a victim of a large-scale fraud. His credit card information was apparently compromised, leading to nearly two years of unauthorized charges totaling around £520,000.

According to a report in The Sun, police in Budapest, Hungary, entered the home of a 27-year-old man on May 6th. Video footage of the operation shows officers, wearing riot gear, arresting a suspect.

The man is accused of getting hold of Johnny Depp’s American Express card details and using them to make purchases totaling £520,000 over almost two years, between January 2024 and December 2025.

Investigators have confirmed the suspect stole credit card information from online shopping and hotel reservations. They tracked suspicious activity from a customer of a major US bank back to a rental apartment in Budapest.

The investigation started earlier this year after a US bank reported suspicious activity – unauthorized withdrawals – from an account to the FBI’s Hungarian office. Police followed the trail of this activity, which eventually led them to a neighborhood within the city.

The suspect claims he didn’t commit the crimes, but a court has decided to hold him while the case proceeds. Investigators are working to find out how Johnny Depp’s credit card information was compromised and are looking into over 300 transactions totaling more than £536,000.

Johnny Depp has filmed in Budapest before, while working on Modì, a movie about the artist Amedeo Modigliani. He directed the 2024 film, which also starred Al Pacino and Stephen Graham.

Johnny Depp, known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, will be in Ti West’s new Christmas movie, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, along with Daisy Ridley and Sam Claflin. This will be Depp’s first American film project since 2020, when he appeared in Minamata.

In the same year, Johnny Depp lost a legal battle against The Sun newspaper, which had accused him of domestic abuse against his former wife, Amber Heard. Following the unfavorable ruling – which Depp attempted to overturn on appeal – he stated he was asked to leave the Fantastic Beasts film series. However, in 2022, Depp won a separate libel case against Heard in the United States.
