Joe Freshgoods’ New Balance 1890 Pack Is a Neon Love Letter to ‘90s Music Videos

The Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 1890 collection includes two colorways: ‘Finger Waves’ (Citrus/Grenadine-Pirate Black) and ‘Naughty Things’ (Pirate Black/Heron-Persian Purple). Both pairs (SKUs U189065N and U18908JY) retail for $200 USD and were released on April 30th, available exclusively through New Balance.

Designer Joe Freshgoods and New Balance have collaborated for the twelfth time, releasing a brand-new shoe called the 1890.

Joe Freshgoods’ new New Balance collection is inspired by the vibrant and creative music videos of the mid-to-late 1990s, particularly those in rap and R&B. Think bold colors, distorted fisheye lens effects, and the innovative style of directors like Hype Williams. The collection features two main color schemes: a bright orange called “Finger Waves” and an electric purple named “Naughty Things,” which pays tribute to the memorable visuals of artists like Janet Jackson and Busta Rhymes.

The new 1890 sneaker blends vintage style with modern materials. It features a textured mesh base covered with a wavy, synthetic pattern taken from the brand’s 890v3 running shoe. Shiny patent leather and reflective details add to the shoe’s bold, textured look, reminiscent of designs from the 1890s. For comfort and support, it’s built on the reliable 2002 ABZORB sole, offering cushioning and stability while maintaining a unique, cutting-edge design.
