When Jennifer’s Body came out in 2009, it wasn’t well-received by most viewers or critics. However, that’s not uncommon for horror movies – many gain a dedicated fanbase over time. For years, the people who made the film, including stars Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, have expressed interest in revisiting the story, and it now appears a revival is finally happening.
While many forgotten horror films could potentially get sequels, Jennifer’s Body wasn’t the most likely candidate – until now. Talk of a follow-up always came from the film’s increasing fanbase. After years of speculation, Megan Fox recently told The Boo Crew that she’s officially been given the go-ahead to write a new installment.
This isn’t your usual sequel where we try to recreate what worked before. It feels completely different! With the first movie, I felt like I had to hold back in certain ways, but now? I’m totally free to explore and take risks. It’s not about being careful; it’s about letting loose and doing things the first time wouldn’t allow – and it feels amazing!
She shared that Jennifer’s Body is a film she’s particularly proud of, and feels it’s finally resonating with audiences in the way she and the filmmakers intended. She especially enjoyed writing her latest script, finding the entire process effortless and genuinely fun – something she doesn’t often experience these days.
In the first film, a rock band trying to become famous stopped in a small town and attempted a ritual sacrifice. They needed a virgin, but they sacrificed Jennifer Fox, who wasn’t one. This caused her to return as a demon, and she started attacking her schoolmates.
Instead of expanding on the hinted-at myths and stories from the first film, Cody shared that the sequel would be inspired by the movie’s fans and their passion for it.
As a huge fan of the original film, it was amazing to see this movie come about as a direct response to that rediscovery. It’s a really unique situation – the fans actually inspired me to make it! Honestly, the whole thing is filled with that love and appreciation they showed. Every movie is ‘about’ something deeper, but this one is especially personal – it’s about my journey, too. Writing it was incredibly cathartic, and I felt so much gratitude throughout the process. It wouldn’t have happened at all if people hadn’t connected with the first film the way they did.
The movie received negative reviews, earning only a 46% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing just $31.6 million globally. Since its release, both fans and people who worked on the film have voiced their disappointment with how it was promoted. Instead of highlighting the movie’s humor and the relationship between the two lead characters, or its message about how women are portrayed in horror films, the marketing focused heavily on Megan Fox’s attractiveness, capitalizing on her recent success with Transformers.
While not necessarily a classic, the movie has become much more popular, particularly with new viewers who’ve found it without being influenced by its original, sometimes negative, publicity.
