It’s an understatement to say Jeff Bezos invested a lot in The Rings of Power. Reports from The Ankler indicate Amazon spent $250 million just to acquire the rights to Tolkien’s stories. Then, the first season reportedly cost around $465 million to create. As the series heads into its third season—out of a planned five—many in the entertainment industry consider it the most expensive television show ever made. It’s also proven to be quite controversial, with strong opinions on both sides.
According to recent reports from The Ankler, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is preventing the cancellation of Rings of Power, though it doesn’t seem to be because he’s a big fan of the show. The company may simply not be in a financial position to cancel it.
Audience Backlash and Internal Support
According to a 2025 report from That Park Place, Amazon’s agreement with the Tolkien Estate included a hefty penalty: a $20 million fee for each season of the show that wasn’t made. Considering Amazon has already invested potentially over $1 billion in the project, it might actually be cheaper to keep making the show than to cancel it.

Viewers have clearly lost interest in the show. A recent ratings report shows that the second season had 60% fewer viewers than the first. On the review site Criticless, the series has a very low score of 6% (labeled “Heinous”) based on 71 user ratings, indicating a strong dislike rather than mild disappointment. If this trend continues, Rings of Power could become one of Jeff Bezos’ most costly failures.
Despite recent challenges, there are positive signals from within Amazon. Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Prime Video, visited the set of season three and told the show’s creators that The Rings of Power is secure and will be allowed to finish its planned storyline.
For people working on the show, this commitment feels especially important now, as many studios are cutting costs and reducing the scope of their projects. But for fans concerned about the handling of Tolkien’s work, it might actually increase their worries.
A Flagship for Prime Video
Prime Video heavily promoted Rings of Power as its biggest show, hoping to compete with the massive success of HBO’s Game of Thrones. When ratings dropped and many viewers reacted negatively, people thought Amazon’s Jeff Bezos might cancel it. However, Amazon has already put so much money and effort into the series that it seems unlikely to be stopped. For anyone involved – whether financially, creatively, or as a fan – it looks like Rings of Power will continue.

As a longtime fan, I’ve noticed a real sense of disappointment creeping in among those of us who love Tolkien’s world. It feels like each new adaptation of The Lord of the Rings diminishes what made the original so special. It really makes you wonder what amazing projects Amazon could have made if they hadn’t invested so heavily in this one – what other stories are gathering dust on a shelf somewhere?
Looking Ahead: Legacy or Cautionary Tale
“Rings of Power” could be remembered as one of the most daring and costly TV series ever made for streaming. It’s unusual because so much money, creative effort, and legal commitments are involved that whether viewers like it or not, the show’s fate isn’t the only factor determining its future.

Currently, Amazon and Jeff Bezos are committed to letting The Rings of Power finish its planned five seasons. This means both those who still enjoy the show and those who are critical of it will have a complete picture of the series and be able to judge its overall impact, regardless of their initial feelings.
