Apple TV is highlighting a new series. The show, a remake, will star an Academy Award-winning actor as a terrifying convicted murderer.
Following confirmation and a compelling first look, production is underway on a remake of Cape Fear. The psychological thriller will feature Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson alongside the previously announced cast. Taking inspiration from Robert De Niro’s 1991 film, this new version promises to be even more terrifying.
Apple TV Unveils a Chilling Look at Cape Fear
At the start of the scene, Max, played by Javier Bardem, asks a chilling question: “What is your worst fear?”
The video then shows Anna Bowden sharing the news that Max Cady, the dangerous criminal they helped convict, has been released from prison. After spending 17 years incarcerated for a crime he claims he didn’t commit, Cady is now seeking revenge.
This ten-part series is led by showrunner Nick Antosca and executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. Award-winning actors Javier Bardem and Amy Adams both star in and executive produce the show.
Cape Fear is the third movie based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel, The Executioners. The story was first adapted for film in 1962, with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck starring in the lead roles, and Nick Nolte also appearing.
In a recent interview with Empire, the show’s creator, Nick Antoska, described the new series as a “nightmare remix” of the original Robert De Niro film. This version differs from previous adaptations by having Max pursue both Anna and Tom Bowden, played by actors Adams and Wilson, rather than just Tom Bowden alone.
Antosca explained it as a twisted reimagining – like seeing other versions of something, then having a disturbing dream about it, and blending that dream with your own ideas and the current cultural mood. He called it a ‘nightmare remix’.
Javier Bardem Has Multiple Projects on the Way
Javier Bardem continues to be in high demand, with several exciting projects lined up. He’s currently working on a remake of Cape Fear and will be back as Stilgar in Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled for release on December 18th. Additionally, he’s starring in a new psychological thriller alongside his wife and frequent co-star, Penélope Cruz.
Despite being very popular and busy, the Academy Award-winning actor recently revealed he felt compelled to speak out. He’s been a dedicated advocate for Palestinian rights for years, and most recently used his platform at the Oscars to call for an end to the conflict.
Javier Bardem mentioned he’d heard about opportunities that fell through for Susan Sarandon, like a potential project or advertising campaign, after she publicly voiced her views on Gaza. He acknowledged this was due to the current industry climate, but added that he’s based in Spain and there are opportunities outside of American studios.
Cape Fear premieres on Apple TV on June 5.
