Jason Statham’s Action Movie Flop Becomes Instant Netflix Hit In The United States

Jason Statham‘s box office flop action movie accomplishes a difficult mission years later.

Jason Statham is a major action star in Hollywood. He’s found success in large franchises like Fast & Furious and in standalone action films. He recently launched a new franchise with the hit movie The Beekeeper, and a sequel is already planned for 2027.

Jason Statham has become a major action star, joining the ranks of legends like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He even got to share the screen with them in The Expendables movies. All four Expendables films recently became available on Netflix on February 20th, and one of them is now incredibly popular.

Currently, Expend4bles is the top movie on Netflix in the United States. It’s beating out other popular titles like The Addams Family, Fall, and even KPop Demon Hunters, which previously held the record for Netflix’s most-watched movie. Notably, Expend4bles is the first film in the series to make it onto the top 10 list in the US.

Currently, none of the Expendables movies appear in the top ten most-watched films on Netflix worldwide. According to FlixPatrol, Firebreak, a survival thriller, is the most popular movie on Netflix globally right now. Other films doing well internationally include the sci-fi movie Prometheus, the documentary Famous Last Words: Eric Dane, and the spy thriller The Saint.

The action film Expend4bles, featuring Jason Statham and a strong cast, is finding success on Netflix in the US, which is a welcome turn after its disappointing performance in theaters. Released on September 22, 2023, the movie only earned $51.1 million at the box office, making it the lowest-grossing film in the series.

The Expendables movies have earned significant revenue, with The Expendables 3 bringing in $209.5 million and the first film earning $268.3 million. The highest-grossing film in the series is actually The Expendables with $312 million. The initial three films were released between 2010 and 2014, spaced two years apart. However, Expend4bles arrived nine years after the third movie, and that long gap likely caused a decline in audience interest.

With a reported production budget of $100 million, Expend4bles actually needed to earn between $200 and $250 million just to cover its costs, meaning the film lost money. However, Variety reported on November 3, 2025, that Lionsgate had purchased the rights to create future Expendables movies. Now that Expend4bles is performing well on Netflix in the U.S., this deal could open the door to more streaming content for the franchise.
